Hi there!
I know applications this spring were super stressful for me and there weren’t many resources for transfers (especially at smaller schools like Wellesley). I transferred in this semester as a sophomore political science major.
If you have any transfer or Wellesley specific questions, let me know, I’d be more than happy to help a gal out!
Hey! I’m hoping to major in Poli Sci or IR, so what have been the best and worst experiences in the program thus far (though its early, I know)
Hi @bachbend Poli Sci at Wellesley is very intense! We’ve got four subtypes of classes to take within poli sci: American politics and law, comp. politics, IR, and political theory. I am only taking one PS class this semester (world politics) so my knowledge of the entire dept. is somewhat limited; however, from my own class and from what I have seen and heard of other teachers and classes, the dept. is really strong (econ and PS are the top majors here) and really pushes students to the limits. The class I am in is fairly discussion based, and the sheer level of knowledge and insight that everyone has–and shares–is really incredible. I have just as much to learn, if not more, from my classmates as from my teacher (which is saying something, because I also learn a great deal from him). Most of my experience has been great, honestly.
Hm, worst experience… In general, I think there tends to be a somewhat vicious political climate on college campuses, and Wellesley (as a whole, not just PS) is not exempt. Since PS is so popular and since there is a political climate that is somewhat one-track-minded it can be a bit nerve-wracking to say something political–whether controversial or not. That’s not even to say that I disagree with much of the discourse, however, it feels that often any discussion is stopped before it can begin, which, in general, is unfortunate.
The things that I like about the dept. and the college as a whole, though, far outweigh what I dislike (by a lot!)
Let me know if you have any other questions
