Is transfer GPA calculated based on USC transferable classes or the GPA achieved at my current institution? Posted about this earlier, but didn’t see a response from anyone. Any insight is appreciated
hi everyone. i am in serious need of some validation or some truth right now on my chances of getting into sc. i am a hopeful transfer looking to get in my sophomore year. i am at golden west community college and trying my hardest to get the grades i need. here are my stats.
high school gpa: 3.9
college first semester gpa: 3.57
college winter session gpa: 4.0
projected second semester gpa: 3.75
projected cumulative gpa: 3.77
ec: volunteer at homeless shelters, food/clothing donations, volunteer with abused mothers/babies, volunteer at runaway shelter, coaching young girls soccer team (age 8), working 2 jobs totaling at 59 hours every 2 weeks
things to also consider: grandma worked at usc for 25 years, father went to sc for 4 years, great relationship with usc counselor, great essays, good ec, took 33 units in 2 semesters so that my high school grades aren’t looked at as much.
if you have any idea on what you believe will happen or if you have any advice, please let me know. i know admission decisions are beginning to flood out and i feel like i need to prep myself for the best and the worst. please be honest and reply. i am struggling emotionally with all of this pressure and i just need to know the truth.
@JordanBelfort1 Ultimately, I’m pretty sure it does come down to only the transferable courses. I looked at my transfer credit report and the GPA listed is ever so slightly lower than my CC GPA. I had a ton of units. 100. There’s a line that says “Cumulative transfer GPA: 85 units GPA 3.952” and another line talking about how this number is further reduced to the 64 unit cap. However, the admissions office might just go by what it stated on your transcript for the time being and your official transferable GPA will be calculated after matriculation and they’ve had a chance to determine what transfers over.
@zettasyntax thanks for the response. Yeah, more so interested in how they calculate GPA for admission decisions.
USC seems to be swimming in money. Are they generous with financial aid / scholarships for transfer applicants? My family is well-off and the tuition at my current four year institution is super cheap. USC is my dream school. However, it’s almost triple the cost of my current school. I’m not sure that my family can pay for the full tuition at USC if I get in with no aid. Is it really worth $76,000?
Well off typical equals zero aid. They give 40 merit scholarships of 1/4 tuition to transfers annually. So like 13k. COA still around 60k per year with that scholarship. Not cheap.
@CADREAMIN should we expect notification soon?
I would wait a week. I know it’s so stressful but we will all get through it!!
@GoodAfternoonSir thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it
@CADREAMIN If I had over 45 units when I submitted my application, and will have 63 by the end of Spring, do you think they’d ask for an SGR? I’m curious because I am a freshman. I doubled all my units this year so technically I’d be a junior transfer. The only thing is that I’m currently in stats this semester so that’s why I’m not sure if they’d request my grades or just send me my decision. No big deal if you’re not sure, I’m just sort of curious what to be expecting. Asking you because you’re the USC pro
@JordanBelfort1 I transferred from a CA community college. When I applied I had completed 17 units, then transferred to usc with 34 units! And I had a 3.89 GPA.
@transferusc88 Wow 50/50 call. Thing is, since you have totally solid record presented at app time, they may just want to be sure you didn’t crash and burn this last quarter/semester. Or they could just thing, this one is ready to go. It also depends on how many pre-reqs you had done for your specific major and if they need to check a critical grade (like math for engineering, etc). However, I know transfers that get in without SGR after just submitting a single winter quarter. So I think I just said, no way to know! But I wish you luck!!!
Do decisions really come out on May 31st or June 1?
Yes, that is the official deadline, but you might also get notification before that, like april or beginning of may @UniColn
Usc is my first choice but I got accepted to my back up school so now I’m just like any day now please but thank you! @Nicholaslkler
I just read a message posted on the Dornslife website for transfers and it says admissions notification will be sent out by June 1 great
@unicoln congrats on your acceptance, would you mind telling us which school you got in?
@UniColn Congratulations !!! Hopefully you can be accepted by USC as well !!
@CADREAMIN thanks for the response! i applied as an annenberg major and my backup was sociology. so who knows. but thanks for clearing that up for me! guess i’ll just have to see
@UniCoIn USC does aim to notify (most) transfers with some form of decision by June 1st I applied twice. The first year, I received an SGR around April 23rd. The second time, I didn’t hear anything until June 6th. I had been accepted to a few backup schools and actually committed to one as their deadline to SIR was June 1st and I had heard absolutely nothing from USC. I didn’t want to chance things, so I committed to UCLA and found out about my acceptance to USC a few days later. I ultimately wound up at USC though after realizing UCLA was not the best fit for me.
