Fun fact: I study at a top 50 university in California. Two of my friends who are one year older than me from this school both got accepted by USC Marshall last year. They did not get any SGR but they told me that they heard back in June.
@zettasyntax Also UWASH is a great school. Have fun there. I always dream about living in Seattle although I live in LA.
@CADREAMIN Interesting. I thought SGR means “Spring Grade Request”, but it seems like “Second Grade Report” also works.
@sagaciousforever If you’ve already taken the math/calc requirement for Marshall, I really think that decreases your chances of getting an SGR. A lot of Marshall applicants that have calc pending are usually the ones that get hit with an SGR.
And thanks I really love the program - it was even recommended by the chair of graduate admissions for my major’s department at USC, so I know I made a good choice. Circumstances have prevented me from actually moving to Seattle - I’m doing the program via distance education. I hope to move there next year though. Or at the very least, see if I can complete my graduation-required internship in Seattle. I’ve been in LA all my life. I’d love to experience living in another city at some point.
@CADREAMIN the college that my daughter goes to don’t have the official midterm report, do you think if it’s a good idea for her to send the unofficial and signed by professors to USC ?
@zettasyntax I did complete the Business Calculus requirement. I took it in freshman year and got an A.
Based on the information below, do you think if I have a good shot?
Stats:
College transferring from: A top 50 university in California
Entering as: Junior
Major: Business Administration (Marshall)
GPA: 3.71
GPA Improvement Trend: 3.62, 3.47, 3.94 (sophomore year first semester)
Units completed: 62 units after Spring semester
Pre-reqs completed: All but the first English class (my school has a different English class that cannot transfer). Lot of GEs.
Essay: 9/10
Letters of Recommendation: 2
Comments: I am low in units which is an disadvantage, but my essay, recommendation letters, resume should increase my chance of admission.
I am worrying about my units because even though I will finish 62 units by the end of Spring, classes such as Public Speaking from my current university may not transfer, so I am low in the actual transferable units.
In addition, I am missing the first English because my school’s English Composition cannot transfer. I could possibly take it at CC but I spent my Freshman year’s summer doing internship so I did not.
@Coopy1 I think the terms may be confusing - midterm refers to end of semester grades or end of quarter grades. Term is referring to the academic year. So mid term is the end of a reporting period not actually the middle of a semester or quarter.
@sagaciousforever You’re at the average transfer GPA and completed the most important course for Marshall quite early and with a great grade, so I think your chances are as good as they can get I’m a bit confused about the English bit though. Have you taken any English courses? USC just requires the completion of a second semester English course. At my CC, this was called English 103, but some of my classmates were able to have the pre-req of English 101 waived with AP scores. Anyway, USC seems to be slightly flexible with the English requirement. I’ve heard of people completing the requirement in the summer before starting at USC.
Wait I need a second semester English course? @zettasyntax I did my pre req in the fall and took English 1C (the Writing 130 equivalent) during the winter intercession. I’ve seen others get accepted with only one English class, but I just need to do the freshman writing requirement, correct?
@zettasyntax Thanks! Yes, 3.7 is the average transfer students who attend USC, and higher GPA admits (3.9s-4.0) might choose to attend a better school so I think 3.7s to 3.8s is quite ideal for USC.
Also, I finished the English 101 at my current university, however, it does not transfer.
USC only asks you to take the lower-division English class and the upper-division English must be taken at USC.
I contacted my admission counselor last year and he told me that if I cannot take that lower-division (first English class), I can focus on taking more GEs. I just need to finish the two USC English classes before I graduate from USC ( if admitted).
Therefore, I think it is possible to be admitted without any transferable English classes. I do not think that you need to finish that in summer, and they just want you to complete the English classes before graduation.
@jj1999 Don’t worry. You can even get accepted with no English class completed. The second English class (upper-division) must be taken at USC.
@zettasyntax Also I am not 100 percent sure if USC will let you know by 5/30. This is because two of my friends from my current school both got accepted by USC Marshall last year. They did not get any SGR but they told me that they heard back in June.
@jj1999 Yeah, as long as you completed the equivalent of WRIT 130, you’re good In my CC system, the equivalent is a second semester English course. I didn’t have AP scores to help me bypass the first course, so I had to take both. Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any confusion.
@sagaciousforever Yes, USC does seem to be far more lenient with the writing requirement. Good that you spoke things over with your counselor And yup, that does happen. I didn’t hear until June 6th of my acceptance.
Which school
@zettasyntax Yeah, it’s good that private universities are more lenient on the pre-reqs than the UCs.
@Coopy1 no my friend doesn’t. We’re both freshman at the same school on the quarter system, and neither of us are TTP. He’s a communication major with a 3.8, I’m an engineering major with a 4.0. I was just wondering why they didn’t ask me for my grades.
Does anyone know if the following classes can successfully transfer to the GEs at USC?
- Intro to Sociology
- Western Culture
- First-year Seminar
- Asian History (a non-western civilization class)
- Public Speaking (a speech class)
- Voice (Fulfills the fine-art requirement)
@sagaciousforever have a look here https://dornsife.usc.edu/2015ge/2015ge-requirements/
Does a 5 on the AP Calc BC test in high school fulfill the minimum math requirement for USC?
@riceballs99 Yes.
