I recently noticed on this thread two initially deferred applicants from EA were accepted. I still have not seen any change on my Gibson account and was wondering if the deferred decisions are released in waves? Also, do deferred applicants tend to hear before the regular decision applicants?
Yes, they are released at different times, although “waves” might not be the best description. I think they just acted on a few here for a particular reason. Most will come in about a month. Generally, I don’t think the deferred hear back sooner.
Thank you for your quick response! I’m so anxious I just want to know. Hopefully I and everyone else on here will get in!
Was deferred and then admitted last week with presidential scholarship and invite to Honors. Got a notice today from UPS that a package will be delivered tomorrow. Sounds like Deans Honor to me! Hope so…
@fallenchemist,
Do u know what percentage of total undergrad applicants apply EA/SCEA?
Nope, no idea. BTW, you do realize I don’t get the notification if you don’t use my complete username, right? (Post #999 for those of you scratching your heads right now)
DHS!
@America2468
Now that a few key DHS results are in, I can give you a more complete answer to your question about those that got in a couple weeks ago that were initially deferred. I suspected this, but needed verification before posting.
These students were very high stat students that got deferred, but had also applied for the DHS and/or PTA. There have been other conversations about why high stat students sometimes get deferred at Tulane, but if you haven’t seen those and are wondering, you can PM me. Anyway, it seems quite apparent now that these students won one of the awards (so far all DHS as far as I can tell) but then it must have been noticed they were not officially accepted yet. Obviously it would be a little odd and awkward to congratulate someone on receiving a full tuition scholarship to Tulane when they hadn’t even been accepted yet. So they went ahead and processed the admission package of these students, and now they have received their DHS packages.
Make sense?
And btw, because I just cannot resist, those of you that were so sure that if you got deferred you couldn’t win a DHS or PTA: I TOLD YOU SO!! Sorry, but I just had to. I took some grief from some people for being overly optimistic when I said they had just as good a chance as accepted students. I hope I can remember this post next year when the same thing happens. I am going to repeat this last paragraph on the DHS thread.
Congrats to you! Asdfjklepwu how did you find out today? By email or by letter?
@CollegeParents9
No emails, at least not to the winners. Tulane sends a very nice letter contained in a pleather pad holder that has the Tulane name embossed on it. It comes by USP 2 day delivery.
@fallenchemist thank you!
Will tulane email me when my admission status is confirmed or will i just have to check my gibson portal and one day it will just appear. so anxious tulane is my top choice!
@soccergirl9897
You have to check Gibson. No email of changes.
@fallenchem
Glad your theory is correct. Just wish the delay in acceptance didn’t happen. Still, all turned out great in the end.
@Asdfjklepwu
Well, we would have to have a new thread (or find the old ones) to have a full discussion about schools that defer high stat candidates like yourself, but in short it usually means they are not convinced that you are seriously considering Tulane as opposed to an HYPS type school. That instead you look at Tulane as a “safety”. It isn’t always something you did or didn’t do, although quite often students that fall into that category don’t fill out the “Why Tulane” question or they answer it with boilerplate cliches. Sometimes it is just that you match a profile that they have seen thousands of times.
But in your case and a handful of others, you apparently did something in the meantime that convinced them otherwise. Of course, just doing either the DHS or the PTA applications, and especially both, shows a lot of interest. So you go on to win one of them, and you know the rest. But the initial deferral isn’t a mistake per se, it is just their best judgement as to your true interest in the school, most likely. All schools want to accept students that really want to be there. Something as subjective as that is not going to be perfect, for sure. And as you say, in the end it is fireworks and parties. Good, good stuff. Very pleased for you.
@fallenchemist oh I understand that makes sense! Thank you!
When do they usually get back to deferred students who aren’t necessarily high stats but still qualify with Tulane’s average scores and gpa? I applied SCEA and got deferred. I have shown a lot of interest by emailing my admissions counselor, applying for the PTA and DHS, and even visited last week. My first semester grades were probably some of my best in my high school career. Do you think I have a good shot?
@yng123
Based solely on that very limited information, you would seem to have a reasonable chance. But that is a meaningless statement precisely because that is limited information, plus a lot depends on how the incoming class seems to be shaping up and the simple fact that none of us are in admissions at Tulane. Most likely, you will not hear Tulane’s decision until the end of March.
SCEA OOS just got in from deferral! Happened to check Gibson this morning. He will be thrilled! California,
28 ACT, 3.65 GPA, community service, sports and leadership in HS.
My child did not get the Dean’s Honor Scholarship, after in my point of view, a stellar job on the submission. Informed today by email. Very disappointed. Reflecting back, Tulane was never on his radar. They sent him a free app, then he got accepted and was so excited ( he really was slightly outside of their norms for acceptance). I realize now that they never intended to give him a scholarship in the 1st place as he was probably marketed to as a family who could afford full tuition (not really the case). Feel kind of strung along. But that’s ok. Its a business. Plus he’s got other great and less expensive options for colleges. Despite our disappointment, congratulations to all those who applied (scholarship or otherwise) and got in! Best wishes to all.
