2020 PRE-SCREEN THREAD

Last interview / audition on March 9th at Mizzou. He will be going with his dad. We are kind of concerned because this time it is involved air travel. We drove all most all of his auditions but last two. Not sure what to do. S was saying he did not see any of his friends since January 15th. He is right we have been running around since then. We will have some resting period soon. He needs to catch up with school work.

@ClassCompMom congratulations on NEC acceptance. Good luck to all who is auditioning this week and next. :shamrock:

—— Oh boy, Missing school… those were times I cannot forget.——

My son’s “traditional” public high school had a specific agreement on absences with out-of-district students. They just didn’t make his audition / college related traveling as “excused”. After weeks of negotiations with attendance office, his school counselor and principal, we finally figured out to do maximum 2-consecutive-week independent study in audition months incorporating his high school’s one-week-long mid-winter break would be much simpler for school, teachers and my son. What I learned was, his high school teachers really don’t want students to miss a few days a week, then a few more days in following weeks. If teachers know in advance that a student will be absent for maximum 2 weeks with a principal’s approval, they can come up with an “independent study plan” for the particular student / weeks instead of dealing with missing projects / assignments and make-up assignments later. It worked out well for my son with smaller stress in 2nd semester but…after those 3+ week long of auditions and traveling, he was exhausted and didn’t want to go back to high school anymore so we needed to force him…Well, he didn’t miss any of graduation events with his friends and was very happy in spring.

Hi Everybody,

Just joined CC after googling and reading some posts. Have S, jazz sax, and first time around for me with this whole college thing, not to mention jazz auditions. Finished our auditions – SF Cons., Oberlin, Berklee, Cincinnati CCM, Paterson, Frost/Miami, MSM and New School. Now to navigate the decisions coming ahead. Thanks to all for your experience and comments.

Hi. Now that auditions are almost done (for us they did), is there a discussion post with upcoming decisions dates for music major?

@shulad the discussion is here:

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/2135909-class-of-2024-undergrad-class-of-2022-grad-the-tours-the-auditions-the-journey.html#latest

Acceptances should be PM’d to @tableforsix or, if you can’t PM, posted here (there’s a growing list; include dates so future audition can see when each school notifies):

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/2168479-acceptance-thread-undergrad-class-of-2024-graduate-class-of-2022.html#latest

To that point, it’s also helpful to review last year’s acceptance thread — most schools follow the same schedule as they did in the past:

http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/2119460-acceptance-thread-for-undergrad-class-of-23-grad-class-of-21.html#latest

Hope that helps!

this is for 2019 though, right?

2019 is the college class of 2023. 2020 (your kids) is the college class of 2024. so last year’s list shows when the schools notified last year’s auditioners, including my son, who is now a college freshman in the class of 2023.

Curtis cancelled any other remaining departmental auditions (including cello, unfortunately) owing to COVID-19. A significant disappointment, to be sure, but they were clearly faced with a no-win situation.

Popping this up here so we can see it. Was getting buried a couple pages back. Still one or two left!

@Doransa, I dropped the ball on wishing your son good luck for yesterday! Hope it was a highly positive experience.

What does that leave us with? Just your son’s audition @rubypiano?

My daughter’s MM VP audition at Curtis was just cancelled. She’s very, very bummed and won’t get to meet @songbirdmama’s daughter. I understand the decision but feel so bad for these performers.

So sorry to hear this news- truly. Seeing what my own D has gone through in preparation, I can only imagine the time and effort invested with MM students. The next few months will be very tense indeed.

D is totally crushed that Curtis cancelled. She said she would sing in full hazmat gear if they would feel better about it! They stated they will refund application fees, and have an automatic pass into next year’s screening (no prescreen required), but who will want to wait.a full year to reaudition with a chance of going once settled in another program? Ugh. I thought the bump on the head was bad, but to her, this is worse.

@songbirdmama she must be devastated. Makes total sense too since an MM program is two years- seems futile. So very sorry for her and for you.

@coloraturagirl I think she is feeling better about it, as others she knows are in the same boat and they are commiserating over social media. She is now worrying about her senior recital, which is a degree requirement and will be hard to pull off if Bienen closes or goes to remote learning as so many other schools are doing.

@songbirdmama @buoyant I’m so sorry to hear that! That’s seriously heartbreaking. It’s very fortunate that most UG prospects finished their auditions already. I cant imagine the issues this would cause if this state if emergency happened early Jan and Feb.

I was beginning to wonder if summer programs will be canceled and now I’m thinking it could be a possibility.

We already committed to WNO and waiting to hear back on two other possibilities…but I’m starting to think everything could get canceled. Our local University just announced they arent allowing kids to return after Spring break and will institute remote learning…

My commiserations to folks disappointed about the cancellation of Curtis auditions!

My son’s a student there (voice, bass-baritone - I got some very kind help from people here a year ago) - and it may ease the pain a tiny bit to know that the situation right now is chaotic and confusing for everybody, not just perspective students!

I don’t have ANY FOUNDATION for this - THE FOLLOWING IS PURE SPECULATION AND IS NOT BASED ON ANY INSIDE KNOWLEDGE! - but I wouldn’t be surprised if they take another look at expediting auditions and admissions once the COVI-19 wave has passed, instead of waiting an entire year.

Since Curtis keeps only the precise number of students needed for a full scale production, and since a fair number of students will be leaving at the end of the school year, not having an influx of new students would have real consequences for the school’s program - for example, my son is worried because they would be seriously short in his fach.

Again, I don’t have any insight into Curtis decision making, and if my son had already got admission somewhere else, I’d probably go with the bird in hand! - but the virus has created a situation where everyone, institutions included, are going to have to go outside their standard operating procedure and get creative in ways no one expected - and that means that the last word on this year’s admissions may not be spoken.

OTOH, Curtis is a 4-year program, not a 2-year program - and they have A LOT of transfers from other schools! Doing a year at another music program and coming back for another audition in 2021 would ABSOLUTELY be an option - and they would obviously have twice as many spots available as usual.

@baridad I don’t understand why you say Curtis is a 4 year program for a MM. From their web page"The program normally takes two years to complete, but a student may stay an optional third year at the discretion of the dean of vocal studies and the Curtis president."
