2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

Apparently as the decision deadline gets closer, more decisions are released throughout the day. Hopefully that gives us mid 50% applicants a chance to hear. It would be nice to receive a decision before the holidays although it may not work out that way.

I think itā€™s important new info that two actual admissions reps have said to two different people that higher stats are being accepted first

According to people who have posted here on cc

One that early action means that those with higher stats will hear first and that those below a certain point will be deferred to priority decision, deadline for decision Jan 31

And now a second person was told that as of last week, I acceptances have gone out for the middle 50% stats

By admissions

But this new info keeps getting buried in stuff from past experiences

Just saying

I find it very helpful info

Makes it easier to wait if it seems that the middle 50%, the tougher decisions as @STEM2017 said, take longer to review no matter when applied

Thatā€™s logical

Eventually time will come for the deadline but in the meantime those with higher stats are looked at and accepted

If someone with higher stats is waiting a long time under review, there may be extenuating circumstances

They may appear to be higher stats but not so in the end according to some who have posted here

*should read ā€œno acceptances middle 50%ā€ have gone out yet according to admissions

It is possible that high stats hear extra early (in November and October) whereas the majority of Early Action decisions (mid 50% and otherwise) go out in December.

@collegegirl2023 hope so! Just remember an admissions rep actually said deferred based on stats is probable
Helps manage expectations I think! As we are also in that middle

they also mentioned to me that the application was open a month earlier than usual, Early action is NEW, etc. Iā€™m not seeing anything coming out other than branch acceptances and a few that have a higher SAT and just ok rank/grades. They may be grabbing a 1500 on SAT right away, but I would guess the flood gates will open soon!

^^^ Must be unweighted i.e. 3.59/4.0 since I see from HSā€™s Naviance scattergram the average GPA / ACT dotted lines intersect at 3.9 / 27.5

Furthermore I agree with previous poster, you own HSā€™s scattergram will give you a much better insight as to how any college looks at studenā€™ts from your HS.
Last year I see that PSU accepted 60 kids and denied 7 from our North NJ HS and that only 7 enrolled. All yhose denied had an ACT (or SAT equivalent) 25 or lower with a GPA 3.2 and lower.

Also keep in mind many colleges assing different weighting to different HSs across the country so an unweighted GPA of 3.0 from Trinity or Styvesant HS in NYC carry more wight than a 3,5 form an average US HS

Caveat Emptor, all of these averages go out the window when applying to direct entry majors and Honors programs where upon colleges set much higher stats vs the averages and ECs come into play to differentiate those geniuses.

Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed, D17 Nursing has not heard an answer yet.

@momoffour in the decisions thread students have been accepted to university park already

Some within a week or less after applying, all with high sat or act and high gpa

Not only branch

From our high school several high stat kids have been accepted

I feel confident that the major and college a student applies to will determine acceptance. My two daughters have nearly the same stats (D17 4.0uw GPA and 1380 SAT and D19 4.0uw GPA 30 ACT). D17 applied to Eberly didnā€™t hear back till 1/26 and was accepted to summer. D19 applied to Psychology and heard back 11/14 this year. Good Luck to everyone still waiting!! Looking forward to reading all your acceptances soon

@sad1010 d19 applied when and heard great news 11/14?

When did d17 apply to hear answer 1/26?

And yes I agree that intended major and college affect time of review

That said d19 fits high stats heard quickly early action this year doesnā€™t she

Congrats on both

@ziveli513 Iā€™m so confused as to what you are contradicting here. As I said, Higher stats are hearing first. But not ALL higher stats will hear first. Thatā€™s all Iā€™ve said. Nothingā€™s gotten buried in past experiences. Our past experiences coincides with what the admission reps are saying - Iā€™ve not contradicted any admissions rep. Only pointing out that if you are a high stat individual itā€™s not over until itā€™s over. LOTS of high stat folks waited 4 or 5 months for a decision in previous years. It had nothing whatsoever to do with the timing of when they applied.

It is true and has always been true that the definite yeses can hear early and the definite noā€™s can hear early and everyone else hears whenever (but usually closer to the deadline) ā€¦but in that, it is ALSO true that high stat individuals hear right up until the deadline REGARDLESS OF WHEN THEY APPLIED. High stat people panic every year when they didnā€™t hear ā€œEarlyā€ and think that means they didnā€™t get in. It does not. It never has. It means that their application hasnā€™t been randomly spat out yet. Higher stat applications are considered first, but not ONLY firstā€¦there there are so many higher stat applications that many, if not most, donā€™t hear until closer to the deadline. As Iā€™ve also said, EA changes that this year a bit, but how much remains to be seen. So far, there is no evidence that anything has changed from previous years other than that high stat individuals MIGHT hear in daysā€¦but that does NOT mean that if you are a high stat individual and you donā€™t hear in days that you wonā€™t get in later. You probably will. So relax! Once you are in, not one person asks you when you heard. All that will matter is that you did.

The 3.58 average was based on a 4.0 scale so unweighted.

@ziveli513 Application two years ago went live 9/1, not 8/1. She applied 9/1.

@ziveli513 Also, I donā€™t think D19 stats are that highā€¦not sure why she heard back so quickly.

I believe that Penn State admits whom they believe is the best in the applications now and will begin rolling out the ā€œregular peopleā€ admissions soon.

@sad1010 I believe your d19 stats are in the upper 25%?

@jlhpsu I donā€™t believe I said all higher stats hear quickly
Please stop using all caps. Equivalent to shouting in texts
This is a discussion thread
We are discussing

@nittanylion1510 that makes sense to me
from what admissions reps are saying now

@ziveli513 I am a normal student with middle 50% scores for Penn State UP and I am optimistic but anxious because of this wait, but I knew I would have to wait a while.

@nittanylion1510 yes same for my d
Thatā€™s why I find it reassuring when we hear directly from admissions reps about what is happening
This year, with new early action

Seems no reason to worry, itā€™s just the process going along

@citymama9 I know a little about the admissions process and absolutely NO WAY could they ONLY accept people in the 25th Percentileā€¦ as a matter of MATH its impossibleā€¦ A) ā€¦ like you saidā€¦ they couldnt possibly be accepting enough students to get the yield they need for the Freshman class and B) they could end up with a lopsided amount of kids in certain majorsā€¦ Its kind of a fun distraction though, keeps the clock moving toward decision day!
