$205 for orientation?!?!?!?

WHAT???!!?!?

Are they serious?!?!?

Is there any way to bypass it?

There is no way to bypass the orientation as it is the time in which you register for classes for the fall. The $205 is for housing, meals, publications, staff, academic advising, and fall program. For one night you will be living in a dorm where they need to have orienation advisors who help you through orientation and picking out classes, etc.

And while I don’t think it’s mandatory, it’s a really great program. I met a bunch of my closest friends there, actually.

I actually have to agree with the statement above. There are some girls that I met at orientation who I meet with every once in a while to catch up. You really get to know lots of people at the orientations.

Did they send you a letter about the orientation already?

Welcome to the wonderful world of money grubbing that is a college education.

@FadedSpirits: If you do not receive a letter from Admissions regarding how to register for Orientation by May 31, be sure to contact them!

I heard from a friend who goes to bing that orientation isn’t really that important and that its just an ice breaker and definitely not worth the $205. And that all freshmen register in august anyways. This info may vary from person to person.

Any opinions? Because it is a BIG hassle for me to go up to Bing since I’m from the city with no car. My parents will have to take time off work, and so will my uncle b/c hes like the only person in the family w/ a car.

Honestly, you get to know the campus and a lot of students there. It is a really good experience and they have student advisors and faculty there to help you with registering, as it may be complicated if you don’t have help. You can always take the bus up if you want as there is a shortline and greyhound station just 10 minutes from campus. There are always cabs waiting when the buses come in and since you will not have that much stuff you should be fine.

i would encourage going – is it essential? no. but it will give you a chance to get to know the campus and some other students in a less hectic environment than if you wait until you come up in august. it will also give you a chance to talk to people about what to take and how the whole registration process works.

and although you may not think its important now, it may help reduce any last minute anxieties in late august if you already know you are set with your classes and know where the buildings are.

as already noted, you can take a bus from nyc. if your parents come with you, i think they can arrange to stay on campus so that they don’t have to worry about how to get around (at least if binghamton is doing things the way they did it in the past, families were able to stay on campus – cost for family wasn’t bad if i recall correctly, especially compared to staying in a hotel and paying for meals in a restaurant – and parents stayed in a separate dorm from the students). and your parents don’t have to come – there will be students attending without parents – and as noted in a prior post, you could take the bus and catch a cab to campus on your own if you want.

i don’t know what your friend meant by this, but freshmen register at their orientations – so most freshmen will have registered before they arrive in august because most will have attended an orientation.

oh some other things about orientation – you’ll be able to get your id card, get info about various campus services, take the math test for taking calc (if you need to), and open a bank account with the on campus bank (m&t – at least in the past, they’ve had a table at orientation to make it easy to open an account with them, i would assume they’d still be doing this).

in short - going to orientation lets you get a lot of nonsense out of the way so you don’t have to be worry about that type of stuff when you arrive in august and are trying to get acclimated to college – you’ll have enough other stuff to deal with then! ;)

Don’t forget $60.00 for parents to participate and that’s without any meals or room.

Orientation is definately worth the trip…first and foremost, you will register for classes. If you wait until August you will not have an optimal schedule. Next, you will meet other freshman in a relaxed environment, dorms, etc. without the pressure of classes. Hecne, when you begin in the fall, you will already have companions/friendships established. Finally, you will get the perfunctory items out of the way (student card, banking, acclimation to campus, etc.) that will be hectic and distracting during your first week of classes. Go for it. You will not regret commiting to it.

You really should go to orientation. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to get the courses/times/professors that you want. Orientation is the time to get the “crap” done before you officially move in and you’ll have people there helping/guiding you through the initial stuff. All incoming freshmen should attend.

Regarding your transportation issues—you should have thought about this before you committed to Binghamton. Actually, it makes a lot of sense for you to make the trip for orientation so you can get get a handle on how to get back and forth during the year. If you plan on taking a bus back and forth, take this opportunity to “practice” the route.

What time do transfer orientations start on the first day?

to the op – i would just add – given the number of questions you have posted here, i would really urge you to attend orientation. it is easy for someone who already knows what they are doing at the campus to tell you that orientation is no big deal-- but it is clear (at least imho) from the number of questions you have that you would benefit from having those couple of days to ask questions and get comfortable with things.

Does anyone have any idea when the august orientation is? Even just a general beginning/middle/end of the month answer will help
