ok thanks :) again i cant believe i've gotten this many replies

so i think im leaning towards retaking since its just 4 hours on a Saturday morning -- i dont usually use much time prepping so it shouldnt detract from my life other than that saturday

oh and the reason i got the six on the essay was because i only wrote 1/2 page (literally) bcuz i was really tired and i couldnt really think of anything good to write the essay on- it was the "does fame bring happiness" prompt
---i'm pretty sure i can pull an eight at least on this essay since i took the SAT in 9th grade before for an boarding school application and got a 9 on the essay ...hopefully CR and Math wont drop much

and to clarify khoitrinh, im not worried about the 2270, im worried about the 6 on the essay

Look at it from a statistical viewpoint. Using the College Boards own Data, you have roughly a 65-85% chance of your Math and Cr scores going down. Why show lower scores? My daughter got a 12 on her essay. I read it and we both agreed it was total BS. I believe the colleges know this and that is why many don't use the writing section. Follish to retake this score.

Yale and Georgetown are the only two schools I can think of (maybe Uchicago?) that don't consider the writing section of the SAT. On the other hand, most other colleges, including, Harvard, Stanford, etc consider the writing section equally to critical reading and math.
However, you should feel no need to retake that score. It is great, and colleges will be forgiving of a low writing subscore.

Yale does consider the writing section. Out of top schools, gtown is the only one that I know that doesn't. To the OP I have the same score of you, and its more than good enough for top schools. Everyone I know says 2200+ qualifies you.

If you got like 6 MC wrong and a 12 essay, I'd say retake just for the writing. But honestly the essay's complete BS. I'd take it if you REALLY, REALLY KNOW you can do it.

as far as writing goes, first time I took it, i wrote a splendid essay about effects of the media... and got a 6 on my essay.

I retook it with 4 hrs of sleep while being fataly sick and decided that since I probably bombed the rest of the test and will cancel anyways, i should write something weird for the essay. I wrote about postmodernism and kurt vonnegut and managed to incorporate rum and the positiveness of drunken pirates as well as a penguin named stanley.
So, I was much horrified when I realized that I forgot to cancel... but!
Guess what? I got an 11 on my essay. 800 on math and 770 on reading.

moral of the story: SAT scores = pure luck.

orrr, I guess you can retake and try writing about something less typical... such as drunken pirates. (I had a VERY nice example involving piratey brotherhood and experiencing bare life as a pirate :P)

and yea my essay was actually a piece of crap...i knew i wuld get a crappy score cuz i was tryna ace to essay cuz i thought i was hot stuff :) so i spent the first 15 min. tryna think of a brilliant idea -- none came (3 hrs sleep night b4) and i spent the last 10 min. trying to write about how britney spears wasnt happy even though she was famous...oh and it was 1/2 a page long
what sucks is i prolly had the test of my lifetime on the writing multiple choice i only missed two...dammm the essay

anyway thx for the responses and i think i've decided to retake it... i mean it cant hurt right?

i'm in the same position except score is slightly different.. 800CR 740M 740W (essay 10) = 2280

i've only taken it once, so it really wouldn't hurt to take it again... but at the moment i'm thinking it isn't worth the money + some prep time + time actually taking the test. any serious, well-thought out comments are welcome. not like some of the ones i've seen earlier on this thread. : /

would colleges see if i skipped the CR sections and got a 200 on a retake... to concentrate my energy on the math mostly and a little more on writing?

if u do retake, dont bomb any particular section...so no do not get a 200 cuz colleges will care. make sure the other scores that u dont need to improve are at least VERY close to the 1st time scores u got or else colleges may think the 1st time was a fluke
