2300+SAT,2.9ishGPA,do i have hope at top10?

Now it's my middle jounior year,i did very well on SAT,and i'll take it again in May or June, but i have a less-than-3 GPA, i came to the US a year ago,and i am an international student who needs FA,do i have a chance at top 10 universities?I know there would be a lot responses saying no chance so can you give me a range of colleges that i can get in?
Thank you in advance!:)

thank you.

I’m going to be honest here, high standardized test scores coupled with a lower gpa are a tough sell to colleges. It tells them you are capable of higher grades.

Which schools are you looking at?

Harvard,Princeton,MIT,BU,Umass
i haven’t done a lot of school research yet,so i have only four now.

Umass system has 4 universities.

I’m going to say no way to Harvard, Princeton, and MIT. They reject people with 4.0+ and 2300, why should they take you over them?

And another huge strike against you is the int’l needing FA.

In my limited experience, it’s highly unlikely that you would get into Harvard or Princeton. My son has a 2300+ SAT score and gpa close to 4.0 He just got rejected from Yale. Not deferred, rejected.

Schools like Harvard, Princeton and MIT are just not going to be impressed with standardized tests alone. They have far too many applicants who have 2300+ SAT, 34-36 ACT and 4.0+ gpas.

Are you looking for need-based or merit aid? BU does give merit aid but, again, a high gpa is required to be competitive. UMASS has some merit aid available for non-state residents, but not a lot. I’m not sure how either school handles international students financial aid.

Have you spoken with your school’s guidance counselor? That may be a good place to start.

I wish you the best of luck.

thank you.:)

It is parents’ forum,so i don’t the word"bump"“bump”,anyone else?

To any school, a GPA below 3.0 and a high SAT like that screams “very smart but undisciplined” which is really not what they want to see. They’d rather see a high GPA and a lower SAT because someone may not test well but still knows how to study and apply themselves which is what really matters. Talk to your guidance counselor about alternatives.

It difficult to help you when there are so many unknowns. Your guidance counselor, or a trusted teacher, will know what you want to study, your interests outside of the classroom, financial considerations and so on.

There are over a thousand colleges in the United States. Recommending one to someone based on so little information is really an exercise in futility.

I will recommend a first step; find out which schools offer financial aid to international students. That will eliminate a lot of schools and then you can start looking at schools that you can afford to attend to determine if they interest you.

Thank you.

Thank you pugmadkate.

You are welcome. Here is the link to the International Students forum here, [International Students - College Confidential](International Students - College Confidential Forums) I hope that helps you get started.

Totally i have studied in 5 high schools,so i don’t have much passion to get a high gpa as the other students do,i don’t know how the adcom will look at it.

I guess my question would be…how did you do so well on that SAT (clearly…the English language did NOT get in your way on this standardized test)? And what happened that your grades do not seem to align with those outstanding standardized test scores?

thank you for the link

I don’t think the english lauguage gets in the way of my sat because i speak very good english, before i came to america i watched a lot of english programs, the only lack for me is the vocabulary which i try to memorize every day,so yeah,i don’t know what happened to my GPA,i don’t show any passion to homework and classwork and only pay attention to tests, this made me low grades, and i have changed so many schools, which also hurt my gpa
a lot, actually this is the main reason.

The Parents Forum isn’t a great place for a chances thread. We generally don’t like to “chance” students.

But we are full of LOTS of advice! Some of it is very good.

So…tell us more about some of the things you’d like to study, any outside of school interests, what you might like to do when you finish undergraduate school, and if there are certain courses you do better in than others. I’m sure you’ll get lots of good feedback.

thank you!
