I'm a senior in high school with 242/550 in some public school in NJ. 3.0 unweighted GPA with 4.0 weighted gpa on a 6.0 scale. Only a few EC's. 650 M + 550 CR + 500 W (8 essay). I think my chances at any good New Jersey colleges are very slim... Any advice on which colleges I should apply to? I've slacked really hard in high school so far and I know that I can do better in college because my goal is all A's in classes this year and have it so far. My "dream" college is Rutgers which is pretty sad... Lol.

Your best bet would be to have an honest sit down w/your guid counselor. Ask him/her what previous seniors with similar test scores and GPA have done. Good luck

Maybe Fairleigh Dickinson for a year or two, then transfer to Rutgers? Or you could start off at your local community college then transfer.

Taking a look at the 25/75 range for Rutgers, your test scores are actually pretty good. Only the Writing falls outside the range. Pull your test scores up a bit, have a great 1st semester, and it’s not impossible to see you getting in, particularly since you’re a NJ resident. But have a backup plan.

Thanks guys.

Apply widely, and soon (just not ED) Apply to Rutgers but try to add 7-9 others. Even if you haven’t visited, apply. If you get in and the final cost is ok, you can visit. Give yourself some choices. Look at Ohio University (Athens Ohio). Get the US News rankings and go down the list looking at schools that are ranked lower than Rutgers. I’m guessing you’ll consider a public university out-of-state. Look at the National Universities category in the US News rankings. Choose a few schools towards the bottom of the rankings, and scatter your selections all the way up to Rutgers. Again, give yourself choices.
