27,000 applications at Rice this year - up 30%

https://news.rice.edu/2019/01/22/record-breaking-number-of-students-apply-at-rice/

27,068 to be precise. @Houston1021 @Riversider @texaggie

My previous prediction was this:
Predicted 2023 ED/RD
25,000 Apply
2100 Admitted
975 Matriculate - 400 ED, 575 RD
8.4%

So now we know the numbers.

Here is my new prediction:

27068 ED/RD
2100 admitted (although they may be even more cautious on this number)
975 matriculate - 400 ED, 575 RD
7.8% acceptance rate predicted

WOW, that’s a low acceptance rate.

Actual 2023 Early Decision__ 2,658____ 408____ 408___ 15.5%
Actual 2023 Reg. Decision__ 27,068___

Is anyone changing admit/enroll numbers? We all know admitted will go up.

@Houston1021 @ 8.5%, under 1000 Matriculate

@Faulkner1897
25,000 Apply (27,068 Applied)
2100 Admitted
975 Matriculate - 400 ED, 575 RD
8.4% RD (using 27,068 = 7.8%)

@texaggie
25,658 Apply (27,068 Applied)
2578 Admitted
1110 Matriculate - 400 ED, 710 RD
10% RD (using 27,068 = 9.5%)

@texaggie

I was hoping you would chime in!

As we have discussed, Rice will go to great lengths to avoid 1000+ matriculated (by reducing the number of offers if they anticipate strong yield). The cornerstone of the Rice experience is the residential college system, which is somewhat immutable in the short term. The ideal freshman class size is <1,000 in the current residential colleges. More than that and it becomes difficult, as the Class of 2021 experienced when 1050 matriculated.

I knew applications would be up with the new financial aid initiative, but I am shocked that 27,000 applied. It will be very hard to get in RD this year.

WOW!!!I wouldn’t be too surprised if your predictions came true. I’m randomly pulling 9.2% out of my prediction hat.

Last year is was 11% overall with 20,000 applicants. We will see! I think all of the good press about Rice in the fall had a big impact!

I echo earlier posters: WOW!

The possibility of an overall admissions rate in the sub-8% range is truly remarkable.

I am of two minds with regard to this development. On the one hand, I am glad that Rice’s profile is on the rise and that the university is getting deserved attention on the national scene. On the other hand, I am sad that there will be many more students who, having fallen in love with the prospect of the Rice experience, will have their hopes dashed by the harsh realities of the admissions process.

Hopefully the students who have fallen in love with the prospect of the Rice experience will convey that love in their application, and Rice will see the fit! This is going to become more and more important as the numbers of applicants increase: Rice will be looking for academically qualified students who love the school, who understand what makes Rice unique, and who can express that in their essays.

A combination of Rice’s new FA initiative and growing application numbers to many schools, bolstered by more students learning about the benefit of a Rice education probably all contribute to this huge increase. That said, I have to admit I cringed just a bit at the title of the article. Seems it should say “…apply to Rice”, not “… apply at Rice”.

I don’t know if this was done before, but a number of students at my daughters Southern California school were sent an email waiving application fees. These are full pay students. Was this done in past years? The email came in December I think. My daughter had already applied. These students weren’t planning on applying but decided to apply because of it. They mistakingly thought that Rice must not have received very many applications…

Is Rice still giving any merit aid or did they switch to all need-based?

We knew it was a reach based on its previous acceptance rate, but I am sad that yet another one of the schools on my daughter’s list is now presumably a single digit acceptance rate for RD. I’m trying to keep her list from being crazy long, but it’s tough when you have the stats for these schools, but with the extremely low acceptance rates - you just don’t know what will happen.

Wow. Just wow. So glad my daughter applied ED - and was accepted. Curious to see how many they admit RD and what the yield will be - I anticipate higher than in year’s past but who knows. I wouldn’t want to be the person at Rice deciding how many to admit especially in light of having too many students in the class of 2021.

@washugrad Rice meets full need but also gives out some merit scholarships. Every applicant is automatically considered for merit. No separate application for merit scholarships is required.

Yes, my daughter received a few waiver for her application to the class of '22.

The fee waivers typically go to students who have high subject test scores, from what I have observed
