2700 Get Incorrect Congrats Letter From UNC

"...two employees accidentally sent the e-mail Tuesday. It began, "Congratulations again on your admission to the University."

The e-mail was intended to request midyear grades from high school students who already have been accepted to the school."

<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2007/EDUCATION/01/26/admissions.mistake.ap/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cnn.com/2007/EDUCATION/01/26/admissions.mistake.ap/index.html</a></p>

good thing its not HYP...a lot of people would have drank the Kool Aid if you get my drift

Not a very clever thing to do. Can anyone smell a lot of law-suits coming up?

Not a very clever thing to do. Can anyone smell a lot of law-suits coming up?

But those students had already been accepted.

no- the emails were sent out to regular action applicants.

Yep, they were sent to students who were not yet accepted...

I should know :)

unfortunately

I think this is being wayy blown out of proportion. They didn't receive an actual "Congrats! You're accepted!" letter. They got an email that said "Congrats on your recent acceptance, now update your midyear grades online..."

Since the people who got it were RD (and the deadline was 2 days before), and it said congrats again, most people should have been able to tell something was up.

It might be interesting to see what percentage of those poor kids are ultimately accepted.

The facts (since apparently there has been quite a bit of incorrect information out there):

<a href="http://www.admissions.unc.edu/pdf/2007_sfarmer_statement.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.unc.edu/pdf/2007_sfarmer_statement.pdf</a></p>

The erroneous email was sent out at almost 5:00 p.m on January 23rd. More than 500 of the applicants were notified within 45 minutes of the error and the remaining were notified the next morning. All gc were also notified and the Admissions Office is following up with snail mail and phone calls to those who still have questions or want to discuss the mistake.

haha i got this mail and i didnt even apply

I'm also surprised that kids actually thought they were accepted from this email. Regular admission reviews probably haven't even begun. Early Notification's official date was Jan 31 (but the kids were told much earlier). Most Regular Decision kids are just checking to see if their info was received by UNC, etc.

My son received a similar email (said "You're in. Now...") from Case Western in Mid-Jan and he thought something was wrong since he didn't expect to hear until April. So he checked his online acct and saw another msg that he was indeed accepted. Still questioning it (and he applied 12/1), we checked the CC Case forum and found other kids had the same experience. One had called the college. All had questioned the email because it didn't seem to make sense... The UNC email should have made people question it for sure but thinking they were actually accepted seems a bit of stretch to me. It is unfortunate that this happened and some kids are disappointed. It's hard waiting...

No, there won't be any lawsuits

There won't be any lawsuits because it was a MISTAKE, but also these applicants should know that the TRUE letter comes in a few monthes.

they should all be automatically be accepted even if they dont meet the requirements.

Oh and there is no such thing as a Mistake, but there is such thing as being stupid.

That's some of the worst logic I've ever seen.

someone's getting fired...

"they should all be automatically be accepted even if they dont meet the requirements."

that's rather dense... not a good solution, sorry

"they should all be automatically be accepted even if they dont meet the requirements."

Impossible. 1900 of the emails went to oos candidates and less than 700 oos applicants are accepted every year. In fact, they only accept 3800 total into the freshman class.

^ yeah, no kidding, that's ridiculous. "Oh, well, you're a really bad student... but we'll accept you just because we don't want to hurt your feelings."

lol.... wouldn't suprise me
