<p>My son asked me the other day whether his grades this semester are important. He's been accepted EA to an outstanding school, but the last thing we want to do is raise any red flags over the summer. I told him that B's would be fine but that he shouldn't get anything lower than that. I'm fairly certain he won't let his grades slip substantially but I thought I'd get people's opinions about this issue.</p>

<p>It depends on the college but anything lower than a C- or any dropped classes that were included in the app can be a problem. Some colleges want to see that the student is maintaining a similar academic schedule and performance as when they applied and were accepted on a contingent basis.</p>

<p>My son had his first C second semester; the C was in AP BC Calc. A couple Bs were thrown into the mix. The university said nothing and he was entering on a full scholarship.</p>
<p>Thx UCSD dad (I'm Revelle college class of '87 by the way). My son got into Stanford EA and I don't want him to in any way jeopardize that wonderful opportunity. I'll tell him a white lie and mention the consensus on CC was C+ and above :)</p>
<p>MOMO. D is a freshman at Stanford. She had a C for math (second semester) and received a letter from Stanford, basically asking her to explain the grade.
If you read the Stanford forum, there are kids who did get letters due to lower grades.</p>
<p>I told my son that in the classes in which he might get lower grades, he actually needs to know the material because he will be taking the continuation in college (i.e., his foreign language). I wouldn't worry about a few Bs, though.</p>

<p>I believe that second semester grades are just as important as, if not more than, the rest of the semesters/years. Colleges want to matriculate students who are serious about their studies, even when they've gotten their college admissions sewn up. Also, second semester grades provide a preview of what students might do once they get onto campus where they become independent souls.</p>
<p>MOMO my D wrote them a letter stating that she had a new teacher ect.
The truth is she had a new teacher (Her previous teacher had to fill an administrative position due to a death in the school ).
The Sub was lousy (gave tests on materials he did not cover in class )
I guess her explanation was credible since her grade went down only in Math (no case of senioritis).
BTW, D loves Stanford. Her only complaint is that the food tend to be repetitive.
