D is almost done w/ finals and will technically be a 2nd year in a week because of her credits going in. When she recently told me about being waitlisted, and her problems getting classes, it made me think of a question. 2nd years obviously get priority when registering over 1st years, but since she wasn't a 2nd year at the time that class requests were put in, am I correct in assuming that there is really no benefit to being a semester ahead in terms of classification?

This is just my experience: I am moving to a third year this coming semester. Supposedly 3rd and 4th years could sign up for J-term one day earlier than 1st/2nd. I could sign up immediately with the one day head start. Basically, my interpretation was that the system considered me a third year since that is what I’ll be. For me, there was a benefit.

Oculus: how about registering for Spring? Did it consider you a 3rd year for that too? I figured the computer/system wouldn’t recognize someone as being the more advanced year because they hadn’t completed the current semester yet. Otherwise, how would it know that you hadn’t flunked a course and fallen short?

I don’t really know. All I can tell you is that my Spring enrollment appointment began on November 8th. Not sure exactly how that works. Supposedly declared majors get earlier appts. but I had declared my major. My J-term situation suggests they gave me third year treatment though. You bring up a good point about final grades though!

I am also taking up a seat in Spring that requires passing the J-term class. It’s beyond me, really.

I thought a few years ago all of this was undone because of many people (myself included) coming in with 40-60 credits. I thought that the way it worked now was:
Within your ACTUAL year, everyone is ranked by echols, major/no major, then credits.
So a real 3rd year gets to register before a 2nd year with tons of AP credits or a 2nd year echols.

Interesting read. Especially about the transfer credits because, as of right now, I don’t have any UVA credits yet. That doesn’t really fit how things worked out for me.

The Oculus - If I’m reading correctly this part of the article covers your situation.

There it is. Oops - must have missed it in my sleep deprived finals haze. Thanks.

No worries. I minored in sleep deprivation in college. I think it’s almost mandatory. ;)

Best of luck on your remaining finals!

Thanks to everyone, especially Hazel, that answered all of my questions! (and makes perfect sense)
