3.1-3.4 and 2090

I'm a Californian with a 3.4 weighted GPA and a 3.1 unweighted. Have 2090 on new SAT. Lots of AP classes (Got B's in them and a C in AP Bio, only A's are in music - I play jazz sax) Everyone tells me the only UC I might get into is Merced or Riverside. Is this true? What other quality schools (anywhere in US) do I have a chance to get into? Prefer a large public or private university rather than a small rural one - but have to get "real" and need suggestions.

I think Santa Cruz is a good possibility. And take a look at some of the Cal States. Many of them are very good. What are you planning to study?

No sure - psychology? business? writing/journalism? (not going to be a music major) I heard Santa Cruz turned away 3000 this year. Seem amazing that a B average can only get you into the CSU's. Even the better ones like San Diego and Long Beach are only accepting @ 25% of applicants. Any other suggestions?

I still think Santa Cruz is a good bet--but there are no guarantees, of course. I tend to look for small schools for my kids, so am not that familiar with the big ones. We did take a good look at Cal State Monterey, which seemed really great, and my oldest is at Cal State Humboldt, and I like that school a lot too--both of those schools are a little smaller, perhaps, than what you say you want, but that's probably why I like them!--and the surrounding areas are beautiful in both cases. There are many good private schools that would love to have you. My oldest S, similar stats, was accepted at PLU and University of Puget Sound--so schools in that range of selectivity seem like a good bet for you. But, again, maybe too small for you?

Thanks for the info - sorry for my ignorance but what is PLU?

Pacific Lutheran University

san diego state accepts way more than that...like 47%. berkeley is clearly the best place for writing/journalism and business, but it'll be tough with your gpa. Your SAT's are pretty good (my scores were at least 250 points lower and i still got in), but the higher the better. also, get some strong ec's

Thanks for the good thoughts but I have never heard of ANYONE getting into Cal with my GPA. I have been told by one college counselor that I am a long shot for most of the UC's because of my GPA. My EC's are music and summer jobs. had to stop school sports to be in top Jazz performance group. I still plan to apply to all UCs but Merced, but need some safe schools that are of good quality. What about private schools?? Any suggestions?

BayGuy:

UCLA/UCB: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCD/UCSB/UCI: Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

BayGuy--ask your question on the college search and selection or parents thread, and be more specific as to size/type or school you are looking for and you'll get some good suggestions--esp. if your post catches Carolyn's eye . . .

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is a good one

Cal poly would be a reach though, with that gpa. I'm nots ure what to make of the new SAT, though. What would that be on the old scale? I'd say UCR, UCSC, SDSU, and UCM would be good matches.

I agree with flopsy.

Sorry to steal the spotlight from BayGuy, but what are my chances at CPSLO 2006?

GPA: 4.0uw/4.35w
SAT: m/cr/w 680/600/670 = 1950

You're in, slo isnt THAT hard to get into.

Most of the upper CSUs, Lower UCs are fairly able for you to get into.

And Abs, you're pretty much in at CPSLO. Don't even break a sweat.

cal poly slo isnt going to count the new written part of the sat fyi. read it somewhere on their online newspaper.
