3.2 to Berkeley...simply AMAZING

A friend of mine just told me that he has a friend that was accepted to Berkeley for fall 2004 with a 3.2 GPA, Integrated Bio major. After hearing this, I regained my confident. You people who want to go to Berkeley, don't give up hope!!! GOOD LUCK...just 3 more months...

no way...is that true? 3.2? and isn't bio like a popular major?

I hate to burst a bubble by posing this question, but it begs to be asked:

A friend of a friend?

I feel the same way. Im a bit skeptical about this.

I also am a bit skeptical. If this is true, I definitely want to know how this person got in.

my friend told me that his friend had a really good essay...

wow essay counts that much?? where can I turn to get help to write a killer essay?

i guess there are always few eyebrow raising cases.

I wouldn't count on it if i were u.

I've also heard of the girl who was behind two semesters in High School during the second semester of her senior year and graduated on time nonetheless.....

It was me!

Sure, that kind of thing is rare but miracles do happen. Because I made the impossible become possible when everyone said that I'd be wasting my time, I've never stopped believing in the power of bringing a dream to fruition.
( I was behind two semesters for reasons that had nothing to do with my lack of working hard in school. I'll explain it if you PM me because it's a long story.)

omg ok 3.2 is NOT outrageously low, especially since no other info about this person is posted

haha true..some people in CC have hard time keeping above 3.0, even in easy majors.

Transferring to UCB with a 3.2 is NOT unusual. For the Fall of 2004, 99 students were admitted with a 3.00 - 3.24. If a 3.2 surprises you, you might be shocked to know that 7 transfer students were admitted to UCB in the Fall of 2004 with a GPA of 2.5 or lower (keep in mind, in-state requirement is a 2.4, out-of-state is 2.8). Three of them were from CCCs, one from CSU, two from other UCs, and 2 from somewhere else.

Don't believe me?

<a href="http://osr4.berkeley.edu/Public/STUDENT.DATA/PUBLICATIONS/UG/ugf04.html#table%2022%5B/url%5D">http://osr4.berkeley.edu/Public/STUDENT.DATA/PUBLICATIONS/UG/ugf04.html#table%2022</a></p>

Chech out "Table 16: New Advanced Standing GPA Distribution, Fall 2004"

Communist smurf do you know if those gpas include spring semester grades?

The point is still that such cases are rare. It was 99 students, but it was 85 from CC (which the UCs have a special agreement with) and that still only represents 5.7% of the total pool. Notice the median GPA? 3.76.

It is not impossible, obviously. It is, however, very unlikely. And yet, as we all know, numbers can't tell you everything.

I, personally, was expressing skepticism because two degrees of removal from a story usually accounts for some exaggerations. At the same time, 3.2 in a bio major is still an impressive accomplishment, and I'm sure said person has some excellent things to bring to Berkeley.

UCB weights grades. I suspect that the 3.2 was UW. If many B's were in honors or AP classes, the 3.2 would go up quite a bit.

Also: The kid could have had stellar SAT scores. Plus at UCs you get points for certain things (leadership, disadvantaged background, etc) and this could tip a 3.2 GPA in.

SBmom: we are talking about transfers

-- Whoops...

So according to <a href="http://osr4.berkeley.edu/Public/STUDENT.DATA/PUBLICATIONS/UG/ugf04.html#table%2017%5B/url%5D">http://osr4.berkeley.edu/Public/STUDENT.DATA/PUBLICATIONS/UG/ugf04.html#table%2017</a>, it is possible to transfer from a CSU to a UC. Granted only 13 people did so to Berkeley, nonetheless, it does happen.

it's normal
a friend of my friend, i know for sure, he had 2.9 gpa got accepted to ucla from last year
btw he's biochem major

UCSD is fairly selective, yet 40% of last years xfer students had a CC GPA between 2.9 and 3.29. So there is hope for many.
