Other stuff?
Anything, just ask

Only a slight reach due to your upward trend in GPA (though even at your peak, the GPA was still rather low) as well as course rigor and your (supposedly) competitive school. Depending on your school and whether it is well known to be a competitive one by admissions, you may be a low match. Everything else seems very good.

Thank you!

And I am currently taking 6 IB courses. I have never taken a non honors/IB course and I have a legit schedule.

My school is pretty well known to UMich.

We have an average ACT of 29 and are ranked 1 in school and are all IB.

Does that help me?

The GPA is kind of low. I would expect a deferral unless your high school would need an unusually high acceptance rate - if so, you have a better chance.

Weak match

I’m still a bit concerned about your GPA - the UW AVG is a tad low even though the 2nd/3rd year avg is a 3.58-ish, but you go to the highest ranked school in MI, which should be more competitive than most other schools, and have an upward grade trend in a rigorous IB program

Strong ACT composite

Solid ECs

I don’t think these awards will help boost your chances

Note: This is assuming that you actually go to IA, marshiechen. (Note to other CCers: This school is consistently the highest ranked high school in MI, and the schools in that area are feeder schools for UMich … it’s the only magnet school that I know of in MI because it requires an admissions process)

sorry10char

biguk, it’s not cool to invade someone else’s chance thread …

Slight reach

 • Weak GPA - heavy AP load is a plus, but I don’t know much about grade trend
 • Strong ACT comp
 • Decent ECs
 • OOS

@ab2013 and @marshiechen

i didnt realize i was violating a CC taboo!

i appologize!!

marshiechen, what is your class rank? If you’re at IA, ask your guidance councilor the number of students accepted last year and the rank cutoff. That will give you the most accurate picture. Best wishes!

I don’t have last year’s data, but the year before - out of the 140 students in the school (I am assuming you go to IA), 105 applied to Michigan, 84 were accepted. I heard from the guidance counselor that the GPA requirements last year are a bit more competitive – but not by much. I don’t know what the GPA difference was between those accepted and those rejected from IA.

I can also say that a 34 ACT result or above has only been achieved by about 800 students in the state. Michigan enrolls about 5600 students per year, of which about 3700 per year are in-state. They also accept about 9000 in-state students to fill the 3700 spots. The remaining 1900 spots are filled by the 6000 or so OOS students that are accepted.

So the trade off is a low-ish GPA coupled with a very high (definitely top ten percent of those accepted) ACT. I’ve also heard that Michigan views IA’s academic rigor to the extent that it subjectively adds 0.1 to 0.2 to the GPA when comparing to students to other schools. So you appear to have a decent chance.

kmcmom13 - IA doesn’t rank students. IA is a magnet school that pulls in students who could just about all be in the top 10% in their home schools.

^excellent data!
Yes, I assumed IA didn’t officially rank, and that would be due to its magnet status. What I should have said was to see where the poster’s GPA fell among the approximate proportion of those who were admitted last year.

My son attended another well-regarded in-state magnet program. In his year, while most who applied were accepted, there were a few who were not and I suspect they were among
the lower GPAs. In this case, I suspect the poster is close enough to the seeming “3.5” line in the sand that together with outstanding ACT should make his or her chances very strong. My son was in a similar situation and graduates this year ;)

At any rate, best wishes to the poster for happy news soon!

What did biguk do wrong?

Thank you guys for all the help. I apologize for not replying earlier, but in the end, I was defferred.

@emberjed: he asked about his own chances.
