3.7 GPA good enough for Rice?

I mean look at the stats, 88% of the accepted applicants ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class. You obviously aren't out, but don't expect even a decent chance for an acceptance. The average applicant has a 25% chance, and has a higher rank than you. So it's worse than 1 in 4 for you.

A2Wolves, most of these statistics are from Princeton Review--although some are from USNW and their website which I subscribe to--also I subscribe to Vault, and some of the details on the business schools come from the Business Week rankings of business schools put out back in March.

tiger024, I'd ask your school if they could leave the rank off on the transcript that is sent to Rice(if fact, I'd ask that they leave it off all your transcripts)--sometimes they'll do this if you ask them to. (depends on whether the computer program allows this change at the local level). Even if they agree to do this, you'll probably have to ask them each time you get a new transcript. You need to do this, because A2Wolves is exactly right with his comments on your chances otherwise.

tiger,
the unweighted rank is important for elite schools such as Rice, and while yours won't do you a great deal of good, it may not do you in, either. Also, out of state admissions were at about 40% when last I looked. I don't know if you will be accepted or not (and neither does anyone else), but IMO you will at least be considered. That said, you need to make sure that the rest of your application is very carefully put together.

ohio_mom, I've heard the 40% acceptance rate for OOS students for Rice before, where does it come from? Just curious as it may make some difference as to whether my D considers Rice a Reach or Match for her list. Thanks, EM

Can't find instate/out of state breakdown - but look at this link! If you can't do Early Decision, their Interim Decision is a great option. This also gives us the breakdown by class rank.

That's a great link ohio_mom!

yeah - I was glad to find it. Brown also provides a decent breakdown. Remember, though, that schools that do not 'officially' rank aren't included in these stats. These schools are frequently private or competitive magnet schools. Students from these types of schools may be admitted with lower (unofficial) ranks than the reported rates might indicate.
