Hi! very new to this so…
I have a 4.1 weighted gpa at my competitive high school, and am taking all honors classes (AP’s aren’t offered to sophomores in my school) and I got two B’s freshman year and one B this year. I am involved in many extra curriculars: newspaper club, marching band, jazz band, winter colorguard, GSA (secretary, vice president), literary newspaper club, astronomy club, french club, volunteered for radiation oncology at federal government hospital, youth drop in pride center, human rights alliance, rainbow coalition, summer enrichment for children (3 years), Johnson & Johnson, and am also in a selective mentorship program at my school. I am taking a Biochemistry course at Rutgers University this summer and took a sociology class at a local community college for credits too. I’m taking 3 AP’s next year: Chem, Composition, and Psychology. I recently took the SAT with Essay and am receiving my scores back soon, but I feel very good about my performance on it. With strong recommendations and good test scores what kind of schools should I look into? I want to go into Biochemistry so a school with a good reputation in scientific research would be awesome. I’m thinking about colleges like Northeastern and University of Washington, and maybe even USC (Southern California), Berkeley, and Barnard as reach schools. I believe my GPA isn’t the best and may prevent me from getting into good schools. Any recommendations for schools I should start looking into? Would I have a good chance at going to these schools considering my stats?
You have fine chances at those schools with your stats. Of course, your chances also depend on an SAT/ACT score, which it sounds like you don’t have yet. That’s fine! There’s no rush on taking standardized tests, you’ve got a lot of time. Aim for a 1400 and above on the SAT and a 32 and above on the ACT for those schools.
Look at page 7: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/higher-ed-brief-sat-concordance.pdf
1450-1480 SAT = 32 ACT with the new SAT revisions.
Otherwise correct - you’re in a good position OP, just keep going.
