3.8 GPA @ SUNY Stony Brook or >3.8 @ Georgetown

im going to be a sophmore this coming fall. i am currently at the State University of New York at Stony Brook which is a large research university focused on teh sciences, etc. i am majoring in political science and have a 3.8 and forsee staying in and around the same range. ive been accepted to the College at Georgetown University and will most likely not have as high a gpa there studying government. i plans are to go to law school. assuming i get the same lsat grade, would something like a 3.75-3.85 at Stony inc my chances at getting into a good law school or 3.55-3.75 at Georgetown inc my chances at getting into a good law school. also, is the $40k difference/year worth it? please let me know i have like 15 days to decide to stay or go to GU. thanks.

If I was you, I would transfer. If you chose not to pursue law, you'd still be in great shape for, pretty much, anything coming out of Georgetown -not to mention the myriad of opportunities as far as internships and government activities. Good luck! :D

WF

i would transfer buddy!! Gtown will open doors for you and idk if Bing willd o that

Don't speculate on your potention GPA at Georgetown. It could be great - you've shown that you can succeed at college, which is obviously not true of everyone at the best schools; or, it could be horrible, if you don't adjust well or feel out-gunned.

Do "speculate" on the debt. Anything more than about $10k-$20k of debt is too much to handle upon graduation and will pretty much preclude you from taking on more debt for law school. Who is paying the $40k/year? How much financial aid? How much debt will you have? Do you have chances for work-study? Are there other, hidden costs in attending Georgetown (such as renting an apt for a full year, not just 9 months)?

IMO, the value of attending a top school goes beyond the cost. I loved my experience among intelligent, motivated, and ambitious people (esp. women - didn't get much of that in high school). The friendships are amazing, and my professors were phenomenal mentors. Loved every second of it.

As for how it influences law school admissions - it depends on the school. If you've been on these boards for a while, you would have seen that schools will weigh factors differently. Georgetown Law insists on seeing a high GPA, regardless of undergrad school, major, or anything that happened in college (medical conditions included!). If that is your goal, stay at SUNY and get a high GPA. Northwestern is much more interested in LSAT, work experience, and quality of your undergrad school than your straight-up GPA.
