I got a 3.8 GPA with 15 credits (plus 9 AP credits and 4 retroactive credits, making 28 credits in my first semester) for my first semeseter at the University of Iowa. I really, really want to transfer to madison but I don't know how good my chances are. I had absolutely no chance getting in as a frosh from in-state, but I went to a very competitive high school and my class rank was low.

Depending on how much credit a student has accumulated, Madison will look at, to a certain degree, the high school record of the applicant. My high school gpa was 3.3, but I took 3 AP exams and got a two "4's" and one "5" on the exams. I had a 28 ACT composite score and 12 on the writing sample. I was in two orchestras, ran track, lived with a german family in Cologne and was in a political action group. Given these factors, how realisitic are my wishes to get in as a sophmore next year?

I was in similar situation couple years ago and I transferred to Madison after one year (I had ~45cr when I transferred, including AP). I think different colleges have different requirements for transferring. I transferred into college of engineering, which only required basic intro classes. GPA is pretty much the only factor they look at. I had 3.9 and I only wrote a short paragraph in personal statement. You should get in just fine, I wouldn't worry about high school records (mine wasn't stellar either).

Just curious, did you go to memorial or west?

Where in the Milwaukee area? I go to Homestead. Are you talking about transfering next year or next semester? If you have amassed a few more credits and continued to earn a 3.8 or so, you should get in at Wisconsin.

^^I went to Nicolet. Ideally, I would like to transfer at the end of the year, but I'm submitting my app within a few days. I'm really not sure how the process works, since you need 24 credits to actually transfer, but the transfer application deadline is march 1st. Do they review transfer apps over the summer or something, because I assume they would need to look at your second semester grades before making a decision. That being said, I know several people who have transferred after one year. I'm curious as to how they do this.

I'm pretty sure that they'll make the decision before end of second semester. I don't recall when I got my acceptance letter, but I think it was some time in early April. So they made the decision based on one semester gpa.

By the way, this topic should really be under transfer students forum.

wow thats very low. A gpa of 3.7 or higher was a must in my high school. They usually don't take people below a class rank of 15% from in state.

Interesting...a good number of my friends who attend UW-Madison have similar stats from out-of-state. They did, however, apply in late October to November. For most of them, UW-Madison was a safety or a first-choice school--but not an in between one.
