Alright, so I’m naturally good at English, history, and economics. I was thinking that next year I would take AP Lang, AP Macro-Micro Economics, and APUSH. With taking these classes, will it effect my social/extracurricular life too much? I’d like to try for UNC or Wake Forest, and don’t want to have C’s on my record if I take these classes. I have a 4.1 GPA right now, and would like to finish high school with well over that. Any feedback helps. Thanks!
Forgot to include this - I’m a sophomore at a very competitive high school, if that makes any difference.
I think you can handle it. Seeing that you have a very high GPA and that you are very skilled in the humanities, I think it’s a good idea. What other classes are you taking?
Have a good day!
EDIT: P.S. Welcome to CC!
The first 2 AP classes (here) are not very demanding. APUSH is time consuming (again, here) due to the volume of reading. My daughter is a 3 season athlete taking 5 AP classes including BC calc and AP Physics - she still has a social life including a BF, but she doesn’t party on the weekends and has developed a taste for coffee…
Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep so that they don’t harm their brain and growing body. Then add school and homework, then activities and socializing.
3 APs in subjects you’re strong at shouldn’t be unfeasible.
Make sure to continue with your foreign language and to take a science and precalculus.
^^^The big culprits there are smart phones, blue light, and high school start times.
I have the same problem. I’m a sophomore and am trying to figure out my workload for next year.
Junior year: I plan to take AP Chem, AP Lit, AP Psychology, AP Chinese, Pre-calc, honors orchestra.
I took/am taking: APUSH (as a Freshman, my school only allowed freshman to take 1 AP). I got a 5 on the AP exam, 770 on the SAT Subject test. AP Physics 1, AP NSL. So far, I’ve gotten A’s in all my classes.
Will this keep me competitive?
@sasha_hu: you must create your own thread with your question in the title. Asking your question on someone’s thread is called hijacking and is considered very bad manners
Personally, I took only 1 AP actually at my school (It will technically be 2 APs because I am taking AP US Gov online; It conflicted with AP Biology and I don’t have enough room in my schedule). However, a lot of people I know are taking 3 or so APs and are doing fine.
As a side note, if you decide to take APUSH, I would recommend self-studying for the AP US Gov Exam (Not the class, unless you want to), as a lot of the information crosses over and it isn’t too difficult if you actually prepare.
Also, as long as you are comfortable, go for it. Senior year, I plan on taking around 5 APs (AP Physics C, AP Calc AB, AP Environmental, AP Psych, and AP Lang). Some are easier than others, but are all personally interesting, so I am not worried about how colleges look at them.
APES is totally unnecessary for someone taking physics C (just checking: you’re getting an A in precalculus honors and taking either Honors Physics or AP physics 1 this year right?)
Make sure you have level 3-4 in a foreign language and don’t overload senior year.
@MYOS1634
I’m not adding it for a joke. I did ecology in Honors Biology and found it interesting. My grade in Precalculus right now isn’t good because the past two tests have been pretty difficult. First quarter though, I got an A-. I am taking Physics I over the summer at BU. I went up to French III, but dropped French IV because I didn’t enjoy the class nor subject and was interested in taking Choir instead.
Thanks everyone! Didn’t see all of these until now. I plan to continue with Latin for all four years and take some classes in college on it. I play varsity lacrosse and am in two clubs, one of which I am hoping to obtain a leadership position next year.
