Is there any way to get cheap summer housing for a short 3-month lease for things like summer research and employment and the like? UVA Housing charges worrying rates for the summer and I'll tolerate something living 6 to a room.

Otherwise I may have to live in the chem building and shower in the AFC for 3 months. :/ (This seems doable -- just where do I stash my stuff though?)

Lots of people sublet their apartment/houses in the summer. If you can wait it out until late April/early May when people start freaking out that they don't have anyone to sublet to, they'll often give you a huge discount (up to about half off rent, maybe even more this year with the economy) and rent can be dirt cheap, especially along JPA and past the Corner (Gordon+)

Can I ask what are the lowest rates that can be achieved for subletting? I’m a low-income student who just wants to be able to accept a summer position (and some additional work), and really only needs a place to sleep, wash and store stuff. All these postings seem really extravagant.

Where do the folk living below the poverty line in C’ville live anyway? I don’t need a “nice” sublet. I’d be willing to room with 6 other people. I mean, the only thing preventing me from sleeping in the chem computer lab and washing up at the afc is the lack of storage space [that I could rent] and a place to do laundry (and heck my card could still probably swipe me into the IRC’s laundry room.)

Is there any way to pay just $300-$400 for the whole summer?

Otherwise I could just find a cheap place to stash my stuff and live in the chem building (maybe if the lab isn’t comfortable enough, I could sleep in the lecture theatre?). The Curry School building also seems habitable.

I think that’s illegeal

have you looked into renting a room with another student? You could easily find a room for 300/month for the summer, split 2 ways, that’d be 450 for the summer.

i dunno, i mean, thornton stays open all night long… i’d be there until midnight or so last summer since my sublet had no internet and it was right across the street.

my ex used to sleep in clemons when he didn’t want to drive home (he lived quite a ways up 29 and commuted). haha.

Would rent ever reach like say, 150-175/mo? (And then split?)

Why are there only single/double postings online? Would one have to scour manually on the street to find housing involving more people per room? (For lower prices?)

Most people living off grounds aren’t going to be sharing a room so naturally they don’t have 2 beds or the space for 2 people. I don’t think you’ll be able to find 150-175, your lowest rates might be at the 250-300 level. For cheaper options you might want to consider renting a room in a house (either students or someone with an extra room), those rooms tend to be cheaper.

Why not post your own “ad” on HooHasIt or Craigslist? I imagine you’ll have more success posting on those sites than here on College Confidential.
