Say, you have this very good offer on craigslist ... but it's only available like a week or two after you have to move out of on-Grounds housing.

Would it be like, fishy and sketchy to say, camp out like a hobo for like 1 week in random sheltered places on Grounds till I moved in? Where else could one move to temporarily?

It would be just such a shame if I had to turn down a good opportunity because of that one-week gap. Housing doesn't offer extensions or any sort of "transition" period (in special dorms maybe)?

just throwing it out there… but what about asking a friend if you could stay over? put your stuff in storage and pay their groceries for the term, etc…
if not, i would totally support the hobo route.

You don’t have any friends you can stay with close to UVA? I like this ^ advice.

I’ve heard of students going the hobo route, I myself lived in my frat house in various rooms for about 10 days after I graduated as I couldn’t get a lease started until like June something. But if that didn’t work out, I certainly could’ve crashed on a couch too.

plenty of students have year-round leases, and not everyone can find someone to take it over for them during the summer, or find someone will be able to take it over for the entire summer. i’d ask around and see if you can find someone who’ll be gone for the summer, or atleast those few weeks you need a place, and see if you can crash at their place. they’d probably let you do stay for cheap, or for free even.

givemeliberty’s suggestion is even better than mine though. and yeah, living like a hobo is dumb. even if you have a car, it’s dangerous sleeping in a car, even moreso on the street.

See powderpuff’s thread about moving help – maybe you can move her stuff in exchange for living in the storage unit. Just stay off her furniture.

I’ll try to see about a 1-week sublet. What’s this about people not finding someone to take it over for them for the summer? They must not be desperate enough, cuz can’t find any of them offering sufficiently lowered prices on Craigslist.

Well, I was thinking of like couching at the Curry School, or sleeping in Newcomb Plaza, the 24/7 computer lab in the chem building, or in a classroom in Cabell? Then there are the park benches off Carr’s Hill Field. It’d probably be a bad idea to camp out near the hospital lobby.

Galosien, some of what you are proposing is dangerous. With the vast majority of students being Virginians, you must have a friend in the region with whom you could stay for a few days, right?

Hold up. Are you an international student? Are you aware the the International Center on Rugby has rooms that they rent out for super low prices?

$40/night isn’t cheap to you? Go to any hotel and try to get that price… Were you looking for something free? Best bet then is your hobo route, just hope you don’t come out of it minus your (fill in something here).

Could you get a cheap small tent at K-mart and camp in a campground for a week? That could be very cheap. Most campsites have lavatories and showers.
I haven’t ever even tried to camp in CVL, but I have at other places and its cheap, and most of the National Parks are safe, well patrolled and clean.

PS: GiveMeLiberty>>you made me spit out my coffee with your “(fill in something here)” comment! Thanks, I’m a little punchy with studying.
