My daughter heard that about 20% of freshman are initally tripled in dorm rooms meant for two. When rooms open up from students that don't show up, or drop out, triples then become doubles. Is this true?

It occasionally happens, but DEFINITELY not 20% of the time. Last year was bad because of overenrollment issues. Yes, the second sentence is true.

what romani said. Also, if you get stuck in one of these “3 people in a double” rooms, you get a corresponding discount on housing for the duration that it occurs.

It will probably happen this year to some of students (though 20% sounds high). There is an over-enrollment issue again plus Armstrong and Bryan will not be open. Some students may end up living with an RA for a week or two and some may end up with 3 to a room for a week or two. Once everything is figured out (who showed up, who didn’t, who has empty rooms, etc) people get moved to their real rooms. I wouldn’t be too worried about it since you really shouldn’t spend a huge amount of time in the dorms.
