I'm a junior this year, and I just took the SAT today ... but that's a different story.

I'm aiming for the Ivies, and I've been reading their websites lately. It sounds as though some still want 3 SAT II's even with the New SAT.

So far, I've taken the SAT II Math IIC and SAT II Writing, both with 800's. I'm afraid that I won't be able to use the Writing score as one of the 3 SAT II's ... right?

In which case I have to take two SAT II's this year. I will either take two in May or one in May and one in June: any advice? I will definitely take SAT II Chemistry (since I am in 2nd year chem and I am taking the AP exam) in May. For the second one, I don't know what to take. I'm not taking US history, so that's out ... I was thinking of taking physics but I think it would be a hard self-study since my first-year physics class this year doesn't cover any magnetism or electricity that would be covered on the SAT II. I was thinking of taking Literature (which I'm taking the AP for), but it seems that that is a really, really hard one to get an 800 on. The only other option is Spanish, which doesn't seem too promising, either. I am in year 4 IB/AP Spanish.

So ... should I take the two SAT II's in May? Which other one would you recommend: Physics (a lot of self-study on unfamiliar concepts) or Literature (... hard?!)? Or should I not worry about the 3 SAT II requirement (somehow, I think I should)? Advice and input is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

On the issue of timing, if you feel that extra month will give you more time to prepare for the one you feel you might need extra help on, then do may and june. If you think you'll be fine with both by may, do them at the same time. I would suggest lit or spanish. Lit is very hard, but you can still achieve a good score with some prep, and you have enough spanish where you should feel comfortable

So what if Lit is hard to get an 800 on? The college admission people know that! D (soph at Rice) got 760 with no prep. It isn't that hard if you are a strong reader/English student.

First, decide if the schools that still require (or, really, haven't yet decided like Penn), are schools you are gonna apply to. If those schools aren't high on your list, then you can always think about it over the summer. Second, absolutely take Chem in May since you will have studied for AP Chem. Third, Spanish curve it tough for non-native speakers. Fourth, what about history? Are you taking AP USHist or AP Euro? If the latter, then you will already have studied 75% of the SATII World Hist. Ask your teach for a WH text which you can self-study for the remainder. Otherwise, I'd go with Lit in June, since you'll have a month after AP's to practice for it.

I'm not taking history at all. I took the AP World History as a freshman with little preparation and got a 4.

I am willing to split up the two SAT II exams ... depending on how I do on the SAT, I think. I might want to retake the SAT itself in June. Then, I guess I'd study over the summer for the SAT II in October. Unless I retake SAT in October and do SAT IIs in June ... I think we will see.

Thank you for all your input. Any more is greatly appreciated.

For many schools you can use the old SAT plus the SAT II writing, if you took it. If you didn't take it, you don't have that option since it is no longer offered.

The OP took the SAT II writing already. The question is, can s/he use this as one of the 3 required SAT IIs along with the new SAT I? My understanding was that Class of 06 is transitional and thus SAT II writing still acceptable (obviously taken january 05 or earlier).
