33 retake?

Title.

33 C (34 E 31 M 32 E 36 S)

I’m not too concerned about the math score as I have a 760 Math II subject test score.

Would it make a difference to possibly raise it to a 34/35 for ivies? I could take the ACT one last time (that was my first sitting).

If you want. It would probably not increase your chances by much, but hey whatever helps. You may also want to focus on extracurriculars and GPA more now that you have a good test score.

bump.

Would schools take the 760 into consideration and look over the 31 math? I’m pretty sure my math II score would convert to a higher math subscore… I feel like assuming my math score went up by even one point would’ve resulted in a 34.

Depends on your intended major and the type of colleges you want to apply to.

For instance, if you were to apply to MIT or CalTech, I would highly recommend you take the test again. In fact, I would really advise to do anything to get a 36 on Math.
If you were to apply to Engineering/CS/Math/Physics departments in CMU, UPenn, Columbia, Harvard, etc., then again I would highly suggest you take against and do anything to get a 36 on Math.

Otherwise, don’t fret much. It’s not the end of the world and 33 is a respectable score. Just know that the average kid in the top 20 schools tend to have a 34~+ so you will be at some disadvantage.
{you will be in the bottom ~20 percentile of the applicants in the test for top colleges}

Ya, it’s really annoying when you have exactly a 33. Cause 34 is usually the fine relatively “safe” line for standardized tests.
Just know top college acceptance rates are in the single digits so I don’t know. Maybe your extracurriculars are superb. Who knows ? :slight_smile:

But ya, if you are applying to the top 20 schools and you are going into a very math/science field or into a tech school, then YES I highly recommend you retake it and getting a 36 (or close to it).
Otherwise, pray. Seriously, there is “luck” in admissions too at a certain point.

btw,
Math 2c is different from SAT/ACT Math.
I think 760 is around 70th percentile in Math 2c simply cause of the quality of students that take the test~
Personally I weigh the math score more with the ACT/SAT math in comparison to the 760 on Math 2c but who knows. I ain’t a college admissioner. Having said that, I do know what Math2c fully is because when I was a student, I had an 800 on it. :slight_smile: and a 36/800 on both sat/act math ^^

(personal opinion)
Honest answer: Retake it. In the ACT, colleges really care about the overall, reading and math score. A 33 is a 33 at the end of the day and it doesn’t help when math is that low for top schools.

@AccCreate

I did get a 800 on SAT math, if that matters at all. I don’t really want to submit my SAT because my single sittings are so bad.

2180 (710 CR 800 M 670 W)
2160 (660 CR 780 M 720 W)

My super score is 2230 and the CR+M is alright, but… single sittings are terrible.

I’m capable of getting a 36 on ACT math idk what happened on test day.

I plan on majoring in government/history so math isn’t a huge problem.

What schools are you interested in?

@Roxbury_resident

Here is my early list:

Harvard
UMich
UVA
Ohio State
Penn State

(UCB, UCLA, UCSD for UC application)

I am a California resident.

No need to retake.

If that’s your list, then no need to retake.
If you were honestly some of these “College Confidential kids” who only applies to Harvard, MIT, Princeton, CalTech, Columbia, Duke, UPenn, Yale, then you should retake. (I’m talking about those kids who don’t really understand “safety” schools are a necessity in applying)

But if you are applying to those following universities, then no, you have better things in life to do!

@AccCreate

I am one of those kids! If I get rejected at Harvard I’m going to try the other 7 RD. Like you said, safety schools. Pretty sure I’m going to get into Ohio State and Penn State, but I’m not so sure about UCB, UMich, and UVA.

What is the point of retaking? The schools will not care about one point, which you may or may not achieve, and only some will superscore. Better to put energies elsewhere than look like a score grubber.

With your list, I don’t think there’s any need to retake

@hhjjlala I do not think that you should retake it, and should instead spend time one your EC’s. If I may ask, what did you do to study for the ACT?

I would retake since your unrounded composite was a 33.25, meaning that one point on one subject would move up your composite score by one. Take some practice tests (real ones if possible) and review your mistakes, try to figure out why you made them and how to not make them on the real thing. You can definitely achieve the 34, and that 1 composite point may make you eligible for more merit scholarships, probably more so than increasing admissions chances. It would be worth it to put in a little bit of time. Remember to spend time on ECs and regular schoolwork and whatever else is in your life. Best of luck!

@PetEngineer

I just took a few practice tests (maybe 3). I focused on reading and science because I thought math would’ve been my highest subsection.

@Zer0Kelvin

I’m printing out eight tests, including some that have dual passages in reading, and will just take full practice tests. For the April test I only studied the various sections and did not take entire tests. I also calculated the 33.25 and was very disappointed. If I had gotten one more question right on the math section, I could have gotten a 34. Hopefully I can get a 34 or 35 so I can delete the 33.
