Retake ACT with 33s in Math/Science?

I took the ACT and scored a 36 in Reading and English, and 33s in Math and Science. I also scored an 8 in Writing. I’m interested in studying mathematics when I get to college, and I’m hoping to do it at an elite school (HYPSM level). My 36s are great, of course, but is it worth the risk to retake and try to increase my Math/Science scores?

I took three practice tests to prepare for this test, and in practice, I usually got 34-36 on each section (never got higher than a 35 composite, though). But I don’t think that I would get 36s on Reading and English if I took it again.

I haven’t had much access to rigorous science courses at my high school, but I have been able to take some higher level math courses at a local university (for reference: I am a junior, and should finish a Differential Equations course by the time I graduate high school). Will my success in these courses and my (hopeful) success on the SAT 2 offset a 33 in my application?

Also: if I apply to an engineering program at one of these elite schools, will my 33s hurt me more than they would otherwise?

It depends on the school, 33 in Math may be a bit low for very top engineering schools but should be fine for most. For schools that consider/recommend subject test, getting an 800 in Math2 would definitely help. With a composite of 35 (34.5), there is little reason to retake it.

You do not need to retake.

the easy answer on the SAT 2- take the Math 2 (don’t take Math 1) and a science and hopefully you’ll do well to offset the ACT individual score. What is your composite, I didn’t see it - if it’s a 35, you’re fine, 34 would depend on your college, major, background etc? Test scores are rarely evaluated individually, they evaluated in context of race, ethnicity, family situation etc.

i don’t think you need to retake since 33s are still really good. and i agree that taking the sat 2 for those subjects would be a good move. good luck!
