4.0

How hard is it to get a 4.0 freshman year at Penn?

How many % of the students actually get it?

buuuuummmmmmmpppppppppp. or at least, what is a reasonable GPA to expect as a Biology major in CAS?

but a lot of top college inflate grades. does penn CAS inflate?

I had a question answered, as you know Beast, but, from what it sounds, if you beat out other kids, you get the GPA. It’s tough. In intro bio, it looks like you’ll have to be in top 10%, and those classes are around 65 students, I guess. I think we’ll have to be satisfied with the challenge and our gained knowledge, not so much our GPA, which is not what school is about, anyways…

on the contrary, in order for me to stay in my program, i have to maintain above a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.5 science GPA. Since into bio might be the only course i take first semester in science, that means i’ll need an A- in intro bio. Which is why i’m wondering how tough it really is.

^dude, we’re just asking for averages and how rare it is

I’m not a Penn student; however, my older sister is a current senior. Based on what I’ve learned from her, at least by junior or senior year, a 4.0 is practically impossible–and not just in traditionally difficult majors, e.g. engineering and physical sciences. Among her friends, I believe the highest GPA is about 3.94.

Although I’ve heard of at least one student graduating with a 4.0, she definitely wasn’t the typical student profile: part of the Huntsman program, interned multiple times on Wall Street, went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, etc.

Intro Bio is way more than 65 people I don’t know which bio class you’re referring to but Biol 101 has maybe close to 200? Not sure about 121.

I don’t know how to quantify hard but 101 was hard for me. The profs don’t say exactly how many As are given but that the student who is in the absolute middle overall gets a B- or a B. If you’re planning on being a biology major though you’ll probably be stronger at it than I was or a lot of the pseudo-premed kids.
