I'm thinking about what classes I should take next year. I'm in this Cisco Networking Academy program at my HS, so here's what I have lined up for next year so far:

Cisco II-H (4 Blocks)
AP Literature
AP Statistics
AP Microeconomics

That leaves me with one more class. I'm either going to take AP Macroeconomics, or an unweighted elective, Investment and Financial Management.

Although my GPA will take a drop, it won't be much.
Cumulative weighted GPA w/ both economics courses will be a 4.53
Cumulative weighted GPA w/o AP Macro will be a 4.5

Here's what I'm taking now.
AP English Lang
APES
AP World History
AP US Gov't & Politics
French III-H
Adv. Alg w/ Trig-H
Cisco I-H(2 Blocks)

I want to major in Finance at a top school, so what do you guys think would be better? Would it be better to take a class related to my major and enjoy senior year w/ one less AP? Or should I just take AP Macro, because it'll look better on transcripts and my class rank will be better, although colleges will not see my senior year GPA?

I feel like AP Macro would actually be a good course to take for finance, but maybe I’m wrong since I know nothing about finance…

You don’t have to take high school courses based on your potential majors, but it’s a good idea to take courses that you’re interested in. I think you’d be fine either way, especially since you do already have AP Micro.

I’m really wondering what other people are going to say to this though, since this is the same kind of question I’d be asking if I were in your place… good luck!

Thanks for the reply!
I’m leaning towards both Econ classes. But it’s not guaranteed though, because of my Cisco program. So here’s my ranking for my electives: AP Micro, AP Macro, AP Comparative Gov’t, French IV-H, and then Finance.

What about my math? It seems like AP Stats will be an easier and more enjoyable class then Pre-Calc-H, but will I NEED pre-calc for college? The AP Stats teacher at my school is pretty good, and from what I heard, both Pre-Calc teachers are pretty bad. What do you guys think I should do?

If you want to major in Finance, you’re probably going to need calculus in college. Do you qualify for AP Calculus or are you limited to Precal? (Can’t really comment on your teachers, so that’s up to you.)

Also, are there any specific colleges that you’re already thinking of? Look up their finance programs and check if your AP Micro/AP Macro courses would satisfy any prerequisites for the finance major. Some programs might let you pass out of intro courses if you have both. Would AP Stats satisfy any math intro courses, too? If you’re fairly certain of finance, you should start taking it into consideration as you plan your classes.

We must take Pre-Calc before we take AP Calculus. As for college, not taking Calc in high school won’t really hurt me; I’ll just learn everything in college, right?

And yeah, I’ve been thinking of some colleges that I want to get into:
Georgetown
University of Maryland-College Park
NYU
George Washington
UVA
