4 B's Freshman Year - Ivies out of the question?

Well it seems like I've blown it. I got lazy Freshman year and got B's in all of my core classes [honors]. Many Ivies say that don't look at freshman year while calculating GPA but it is considered.

Since then I've gotten Straight A's in AP classes. Will this upward trend be favorable to me? I'm so scared!

GPA wise you are ok. We don't know enough about you anywhere else though to say whether or not you could get into the Ivies, as they are extremely holistic in there approach.

nope thats not true... i got a 2.9 and a 3.7 freshman year... but i got straight A's soph, junior and part of senior year... all with 6 ap classes each year (5.0 gpa)... i got rejected from all the ivies... they look at freshman year as equally as any year and it gets counted into your rank... AND cllege admissions is all about numbers ( personal story and I learned this truth the hard way)

I know for a fact that it isn't included into your rank.

Eh...I know someone who got several Bs freshman year. Now they go to Yale.

Relax, it'll be fine.

Relax. B's freshmen year are no biggies. If you truly are Ivy material (a lot of kids get straight A's but are no where near making into an Ivy) you will get in. As I am sure you are looking for facts and numbers to ease your mind, I might as well share my story with you.

I got straight B's my freshmen year (with the exception of math I think?) but I then pulled that up to mostly straight A's (not as well as you did!) and I will now be attending an Ivy. I wasn't even top 10% due to that not-so-great freshmen year but I still made it through!

So relax, if your last years are good enough, a couple B's wont hinder your chances.

It matters, but it's part of a much bigger picture.

great story Avelez. What Ivy will you be attending?

It depends, do you have any hook? If not I don't think there is a very high probability of getting into Ivies. Do apply, just don't hold your hope up.

It also really depends on how difficult your school is. I've been in all honors/AP/IB classes, and I've had 4 B's over the course of freshman, sophmore, and junior year, and I got into penn early. However, this still put me in the top 5% of my class (they will not tell us anything other than that). Just keep your grades up and do your best.

They look at things overall.

Or I doubt Dartmouth would've accepted me with my 79 in AP Chem on my mid-year report (senior year, too! so that blew bits and pieces).

Don't worry too much about it. There's no point, since you can't go back and change things. Just try to do your best.

I got into Princeton with several B's, and I know others who got in with several B's too. Obviously, A's are better but don't lose all hope. Try to concentrate on what you can still do to improve your chances. I would definitely still apply to Ivy schools/elite schools that really interest you.
