if i screwed up freshman year like really screwed up...(B's and C's) does that ruin my chances to an ivy league eventhough if i get good grades now/and until i apply to college (don't want to jinx it though) since it affects my gpa...=/

Well... yes and no.

Are there any circumstances in your freshman year that impacted your grades? Many top schools don't even look at your freshman grades [U Mich for one even though it's not ivy].

Schools understand that freshman year is hard, but it will impact your rank which is important to many schools.

Does it ruin your chances? Absolutely not.

Sometimes schools like to see an upward trend, so you have that going for you. Unfortunately it will still affect your GPA and if you don't have a good reason for your freshman year problems, it will probably affect admissions to Ivies (I'm not sure how much).

OP, i also have the same question.
I got A's and B's (more B's than A's) and it impacted my gpa significantly! I ended up with a 3.333uw, so I'm pretty sure if we both just keep up those A's we can raise our gpa & rank :)
If we do, we'll have a better chance at the Ivys.

Don't worry, I got Ds and Fs freshmen year, and now I'm getting a 4.2.

I am not going to Ivies and I don't want to, unless there's some specific reason why you want to go to the Ivies over other schools of similar caliber other than the prestige, then don't worry about it.

bad grades during freshman year = no honors/acc courses sophomore year = harder time getting into AP classes junior year.

found that out the hard way. but as long as you strive now and from now on get straight As or something, you'll be fine. that shows to them that you've matured, disciplined yourself, and are ready to take on responsibility.

I did bad freshman year as well, but that was because of a family death of someone very close to me that affected me greatly during that year...how do I tell this to colleges? I don't want to seem like I'm making an oppurtunity out of this but I don't want it to seem like i just slacked off without reason either during that year.

you can still take honors and APs even if you get Ds or Cs in a class the previous year... you just might not want to.

so does that mean they omit freshman year into the cumlative gpa?

@ xolala
no, freshman GPA is considered for class rank and cumulative GPA (at least in my school).

@ benellis
our school has course requirements for honors/accelerated/AP classes =/
