4 years of a foreign language

Hello everyone!
I am a junior trying to get in to UMich. Right now I am in a level 4 french class at my school (level 5 is AP French.) I have done 4 years of French (including this one), 3 of which are honors courses. I understand that most colleges want 4 years of a language in high school, but I simply have no interest of continuing the subject into senior year. Additionaly, I would have to take a class at a university rather than my high school to do a higher level of french, which would be very inconvenient for me. Should I continue with french despite the fact that I don't enjoy it and it is inconvenient, or should I take another more useful and interesting class and risk possibly having a weaker application?

Be aware that many colleges have foreign language requirements as part of their own graduation requirements, and unless you want to pick up a new language, which may require more study, it might be in your best interest to continue with French so that you can go on to fulfill the language requirements at college early.

But, IME it is quite common to have only 3 years of foreign language in high school. As long as you are indeed exchanging it for another serious academic course, I don’t see a problem. Most colleges will post recommendations as to how many years they want you to have studied each subject. Check them out for each of your schools.
