This is kind of similar to the "middle school classes" question on this forum. I took French 1 in middle school, followed by French 2 frosh year, Honors 3 soph year, and Honors 4 senior year. Most schools I'm looking at recommend 4 years of foreign lang, but I am really uninterested in taking AP French 5. Do the colleges recommend 4 years as a high schooler or at least through level 4 in terms of classes?

“4 year” recommendations or requirements mean reaching the fourth high school level of the language not that you have to take a language in all four years of high school.

so through level 4 is sufficient?

Yes, four years of the language, combination of middle school and high school.

Thank you very much

Sorry to the other person posting, but honestly I would suck it up and keep taking the language. Here is why:

It is a proven statistic that students who take a math and language class are more successful in college the next year. I don’t know why but the two correlate.

If you take French 5 you will probably do better on a college placement test. This will allow you to skip over required language credits in college which would save you some money. Its better to suck it up and take it one more year so that you can skip over 2-3 years of language in college.

It depends on the college you are going to though. I am going to U of M and that is how it works there. If you are going to a smaller school, screw it and have fun your senior year, but if you aren’t going to a smaller school it might be worth it to suck it up.

I’m looking at places like Dartmouth, Williams, Colgate, Lehigh, etc. What do you think I should do based on that?

Dartmouth? They are a really good college right? I think you might want to suck it up. What did you get on your ACT/SAT? If it was REALLY good then you can get away with dropping the language class, but if you are on the borderline for getting accepted you should suck it up.

Respond please. I’ll try helping as much as I can…

I haven’t taken ACT/SAT, but my GPA is a 4.25

Sorry. I was just offline for a little bit. Okay that is very impressive. I think you can GET AWAY with it. Definitely you can get away with it, but now the question is do you want to get out of the class really badly?

If you just want to get out of there I still say suck it up because it may help down the road, but if you are like a lot of my friends in my German class who got sick and tired of the class, then just leave because you might end up blowing the class off due to not caring anymore.

Yeah I think you will be fine. Make sure you do well on that ACT though good luck.

Come to think of it my brother quit taking German in senior year of high school and he is doing fine right now. So yeah switch out of there man. You’ll be fine. Sorry if I didn’t give you the answer you wanted for a long time. :)
