5 hour energy: good or bad?

I wouldnt take them, I got a bad feeling if you take them regularly what they will do to you. besides, I dont think they taste good to begin with

I don’t think it’s something you should take regularly, but if you really need to get some studying down for an exam, I think it helps.

Is there really “no crash,” that sounds like bull to me.

I stick to the tried and true method of coffee drinking.

I don’t get how coffee works for people, I never feel anything after drinking coffee… The only time I’ve ever stayed up was when I got a venti caramel frappucino with whip cream in New York for a band trip in 7th grade, I’ve never felt anything since when drinking coffee drinks.

It’s just caffeine guys… and with the same amount as a cup of coffee, it’s ridiculously overpriced and overhyped. MarquisShowChoir, people have different levels of caffeine tolerance. That frappuccino has 130 mg caffeine (plus a lot of sugar that helped), so even a short brewed coffee from Starbucks would have more than that (180 mg). If you stick to the espresso sugary creamy drinks, you’ll barely get any caffeine.

I broke out pretty bad. Maybe it was the fact that I drank like 4 of them all at once…never touched the stuff again.

Anyway, I drink mocha frappe’s from McDonald’s. I drank them religiously this past semester. It kept me going whereas a cup of coffee from home could not. I haven’t had one in a while since it’s summertime and I doubt that I’ll go to McDonald’s much since there’s a Starbucks attached to my library on campus.

I took a 5 hour energy a few months ago. Here are my experiences.

The first time, it wasn’t half bad. The formula has the consistency of syrup. It was a little sweet, and I actually liked it. I think I had a little more energy than usual after drinking it. I only downed half the bottle and left the rest for later.

The second time I drank it, IT WAS HELL. I was in class, wearing a jacket on a turtleneck. I suddenly started sweating like crazy. It felt like I had a fever. I wanted to rip off my jacket, but I didn’t want to, because I probably had a huge sweat stain on the back of my turtle neck. Class was starting in like 5 minutes, and I was there, sitting down, dripping sweat all over the desk. I was about to die in my turtleneck. I ran to the water fountain, drank some water, and that didn’t help at all. It was like squirting a water gun into a burning building.

The hot flash finally ended after about 5-10 minutes.

Turned out, the term for it is a “niacin flush.”

So while it gave me energy, just be prepared for the possibly niacin flush. I advise taking 5 hour energy in the shower, just in case.

^I experienced something similar Ice Qube. Luckily I was alone and it was 3 am.

It burns like hell going down. I would reccomend againt it.

I used to take 5-hour-energy in high school (usually late at night to finish APUSH notes.)

It didn’t help me at all. It would just make me manic. I may not have always finished my homework, but boy was my room spotless!

I forgot to add this: I was sweating so hard that the sweat corroded my chain. I had to sue 5 hour energy cause I had a really nice gold chain .

My throat didn’t burn when downing 5 hour energy. Oh well. I guess the one takeaway from this thread is that everyone’s body chemistry is different, and that people will react in different ways.

Best advice: try 5 hour energy. Alone. While shirtless. With headband on. And a towel nearby. And with a glass of water. And with a phone with 911 on speed dial.

well thanks for digging this thread up… but while it’s still up, I’ll just throw this out there.

do not drink the whole bottle like it’s a jello shot, and for crying out loud don’t drink it on an empty stomach. And if you’re having to drink it at all, you should probably change your routine.

also, those 5 hour energy commercials are such horse****. it’s like they want to get sued.

Jesus this isn’t like a crazy drink or anything. It gives you some sustained energy when you feel like you’re about to fall asleep in the library. Almost everyone I know uses it a little. It’s not like it’s tough to drink, just down the whole bottle it doesn’t even taste that bad. If you’ve ever in your life taken a shot of vodka you’ll have no problem with it.

I was just being over dramatic, because I hate energy drinks.

but seriously. that little bottle of poison contains more caffeine than the hardest stuff they sell at starbucks, and probably more B12 than your average weekly diet. You want to gulp that thing down like vodka, go right ahead.

I haven’t tried it although I do have one. Kinda scared to take it though. A 5-hour energy drink has as much sugar as about 7 Coca-Colas. If it has that much sugar… Yikes!

Caffiene is a horrible thing to become dependent on. I can see chugging something like 5 hour energy on finals morning after not sleeping well but definitely don’t start relying on it. You’ll start losing all of the benefits (focus/energy/etc) while just retaining the twitchy/aggravated feeling. Not to mention screwing up your thyroid/pancreas/etc with all the other junk in it.

The one time I took five hour energy was right before my grad night senior year of high school - it literally hyped me up so bad that I looked like I was a crack head. Ask any of my friends from that night and they’ll all tell you that I was literally running around six flags like a crazy lady. I don’t know why it affected me so much and for so long though :O

Truthfully, I don’t know anyone who uses this. I don’t go near the stuff anymore. It’s been a couple years. I definitely don’t recommend it but take my review with a grain of salt. I drink monster energy drinks like they’re going out of style during finals week.

@spectastic, it definitely does not… [Caffeine in 5 Hour Energy](<a href=“Caffeine Informer”>Caffeine Informer) 138 mg vs [The Complete Guide to Starbucks Caffeine](<a href=“Caffeine Informer”>Caffeine Informer) 260 mg for a SMALL coffee

my source has the caffeine at 207 mg. I suppose it does have less total caffeine than 260, but who chugs a cup of coffee like that? Especially if you’re not a regular coffee drinker, your body suddenly has to metabolize a large amount of caffeine. I’m not a biochemist, but it doesn’t take two brains to figure out that’s not good for your body.

The extra strength has the 207 mg. I usually finish my Venti coffee within 10 minutes, and caffeine is fully absorbed into the body at 45 minutes after consumption, so the difference between chugging it in a second and over a span of 15-30 minutes really doesn’t make much of a difference. Caffeine wise, 5 hr energy is no more dangerous than your average coffee. The biggest danger is that things like 5 hr energy and Monster and stuff are often marketed to kids, and are easier to drink multiple products.
