What is the significance of this short phone interview I had yesterday.
Standardised questions.Have you applied elsewhere,where?etc ed,rd.
Interviewer eating(sound like) and telling me he had 125 to go thru therefore making every interview short.
Before I fully answer one question,he is onto the next one, like he 's ticking each standard questions off.
I dont feel good.
But I cant ask for my money back!!!!!!!

dude that really sucks. i'm sorry.

Hmmmm......

Was it a student that called? A lot of times schools have students who are majoring in your field call a bunch of kids to ask them if they have any questions, etc...... Don't worry, if this was the case, they catch most kids off guard and don't really carry any weight.

no,alum called.Must not be too interested.
Does Columbia interview carry weight?
Upenn says theirs dont

The admissions rep said that they don't carry much weight, but its a bigger deal if you are offered one and choose not to do it.

that's the lamest excuse for a dedicated alum that i've ever heard. My interviews have taken an average of an hour, generally at a starbucks.

A few alums do 100+ interviews. I always wondered how they pulled that off. Maybe this BS is how they do it.

quote:that's the lamest excuse for a dedicated alum that i've ever heard. My interviews have taken an average of an hour, generally at a starbucks.

Yep,my Harvard interview was over an hour at Starbucks.

5 minutes?? are you serious? thats not fair to u.....Anyways, I do not know what that means but I m sure its not much. So don't worry about it.

Yeah, my Barnard interview was on campus, run by a current senior, and lasted 15 minutes. No conversation involved, just me answering her questions and her reading her four prompts off a page. Then me desperately trying to extend the interview and asking a few questions... blah. I feel like I missed out.

I guess a lot of people just don't have the social skills and conversational ability necessary to be a halfway decent interviewer.

My first time I was a little scared and I relied a lot on a prepared sheet of questions, but it flowed, and after 15 minutes i was fine. Every time after that has been very fluid, very few awkward pauses, some laughing here and there... and I haven't done too many of these.

Yikes.

You should contact the admissions office about it. I'm not suggesting you call to complain about your own interview or try to get another one. I think it's just a good idea to let the admissions office know this is happening. If they find out that there aren't enough interviewers in your area to do proper interviews for everyone, they will be able to improve the system for future applicants. Just let them know about the general situation. I myself wouldn't worry too much about it, since the interview is fairly insignificant--but it's good to let the admissions office know

why would these people want to do interviews?? they don't even seem interested!

I think that's just how Columbia does the interviews...sorry, I didn't apply to Columbia, so I didn't do much research, but a friend of mine got a "surprise" 10-min phone interview as well from C on Monday.

Not at all. They recommend 30-45 minutes. They say to keep it under an hour, though.

My level of interest correlates with the candidate's level of interest. If the candidate is interesting, has a lot of questions, seems interested in Columbia, time flies. If the kid is shy and/or doesn't know anything about Columbia, doesn't seem interested, etc., it's hard to be interested.

yeah, i think it really depends on the interviewer and how much time they have, how many people, etc. the guy i had was really nice and we talked for an hour.
your situation sounds unfair, though. i would recommend calling the admiss dept, and asking if this is normal -- you don't have to give your name or the alumni's name if you don't want to.

shoot. at least cestlavie2 got an interview...

just to let you know, interviews don't matter much at all.

It's just a way to make alumi feel special for 40 mins.

Trust me, I'd know..

"Trust me, I'd know.."

...and you, as a college applicant, would know this because...?

i've done an average of 400-500 word writeups for each of my interviews. It didn't feel special, it felt like work, and I did it because I felt like I was contributing something to my school. If that means diddly to anyone - which I sincerely doubt - I bet they wouldn't go to all the effort they do to prep you.
