I haven't been started school there yet, but I'll try.

5 dislikes:
Dorms seem small
Everything is done online
Quarter system...but hey maybe I'll end up liking it (seems scary though)
Big school
No football

The location is incredible. San Diego is probably one of the best cities to live in. There is everything here. Balboa Park, Beach cities, downtown, suburbia. You know it, we have it. Plus now you have the privilege to root for my awesome Chargers.

One huge negative thing about San Diego is the car situation. If you live in Southern California (Not LA) you probably know what I am talking about. Everyone has a car. Everyone likes to get their destination as fast as possible. We have the worst traffic in the world. The golden triangle is right outside of UCSD...That means if you try to go anywhere during rush hour with a car, good luck. I don't like driving in San Diego, but it is a must. Once you live in San Diego for a few months, you'll understand where I am coming from.

About the football scene, San Diegans can really get into it (raider fans beware lol) and if you want to as well, you can. If you want to root for the Chargers you can go to a restaurant like Trophy's and watch the game with a bunch of other fans. Or you can go to a game; the trolley stops right at the stadium.

roflkeke is right about the football and the car lifestyle of san diegans. But San Diego traffic is not the worst in the world, LA and other, bigger cities are worse. That being said, i would suggest that you not even think about driving around 5 pm unless you know what you are doing or your destination is very near. There are ways around the traffic (depends on where you are talking about of course) and unless you want to travel around 8 or 9 am or 4 or 5 pm you don't really have to worry about traffic.

What are you looking for in a college town? What would a college town give you that you won't be getting from la jolla?

5 things I like:
-Plenty of research opportunities in areas that I'm interested in.
-Weather
-Classes are challenging, but not to the point where I'm always lost/confused.
-People are laidback, haven't really experienced any cut-throat competition, even in science/pre-med classes.
-All of the beautiful art pieces on campus! (Stuart Collection)

5 things that I dislike:
-That a lot of people COMPLAIN about lack of social life/boring campus life/no school spirit (no sports)...you should have known before you came here that it's not exactly a "party school"....and if you're motivated and not lazy it is easy to have a fun time here!
-Public transportation isn't that great (just metro buses)
-College system...while I definitely love it in some ways, it seems to be the main thing that is preventing UCSD from having a unified student body and "school spirit"
-While some professors are fantatistic, some really aren't that good...though this is to be expected at almost any college, especially public universities.
-Too many people go home on the weekends! There should be more programs for students on the weekends, on campus.

So overall, I do not regret coming here at all, though I suppose it is not a good school for everyone.

Likes:
-Socially fantastic, I'm rarely bored
-Delta Lambda Phi and other student organizations
-The new Price Center expansion coming in a few months (it looks amazing)
-Challenging, thought-provoking classes like ethnic studies and CAT
-Location.

Dislikes:
-No financial aid to stay during the summer
-Tricky financial aid processes in general
-I wish the shuttles were better
-The hills hurt my thighs sometimes
-um, can't think of another dislike

If it isn't clear, I freakin love UCSD. I'm going back to SD tomorrow. ^__^

new stores (i heard a bank, salon, mini grocery store, restaurants)...yay for our quarterly $37.50 university center fee (?) to pay for overpriced milk and cheese and $80 haircuts!

I've seen the floorplans and I know there are a few more restaurants, lots of meeting rooms, a night club, ball rooms, a grocery store. I'm excited about the club, 'hope people go.

"The expansion will double the size of the facility and will include six new restaurants, expanded bookstore, coffee shop, Asian tea shop, full-service bank, meeting rooms, nightclub and a second ballroom. Also planned is more space for student organizations, more lounge, study and computing space, and a 24-hour area that will include late-night dining."
