Best and Worst things about UCSD

I am currently a student at UCSD and want to know what others think of UCSD as a whole. Mainly what people like or dislike about UCSD, and this can be academics, social life, food, dorms etc.

Some people dislike that it is not very lively it but I actually like that most UCSD students seem focused on their education than partying.

For me, the best things of UCSD are the proximity to the beach, the weather on campus is great (I’m from norcal and think any temperature above 70 degrees is awesome), the many things to do in san diego like go to tj, the zoo, the bars in pb, etc. You can learn to surf and smoking on the cliffs is always fun too

the bad things about UCSD, the revelle hum classes, the lack of proper school spirit (if only the bitter people wearing cal or ucla shirts would just wear ucsd)

don’t go to tj

Worst thing: “UC Socially Dead.” Sorry for all those people who like to hate on their school and have no pride. There are plenty of social events everyday, parties TOO. My favorite kind of people on campus are the ones who hang out in the top floors of Geisel and whisper to each other about how the they’re always in Geisel because there’s nothing better to do. I think it’s more like the other way around: those people don’t know how to find/make a social life, so they force being socially dead upon themselves. Personally, I’m always skipping events because of all the homework I have. It’s not even an isolated group that’s always throwing parties. There’s events in every single college, club, you name it. I love UCSD, but I hate the people who come here and try to bring down everyone around them.

College is what you make of it. As cdo said, there are events EVERYWHERE. It’s just up to you to decide whether you want to go to them or stay in your room whining about how UCSD is “socially dead.”

Speaking about worst/best things, how safe is the UCSD campus? My parents have been scared b/c of its closeness to Tijuana, and I just read the email about the attempted rape at Warren. o.o

san diego is not “close” enough to tijuana to influence the safety of the campus

Lol
most people that say UCSD is boring is those people who were nerds their whole life and expects college to take care of their lack of social skills
UCSD is cool except there is nothing to eat after midnight besides burgerking and the campus is way too big
going to class sucks

Don’t worry about campus being close to Tijuana. The scary stories you hear have absolutely nothing to do with San Diego.

Best - Location. Cannot beat this weather, proximity to the beach, and San Diego in general is a gem of a city. Great atmosphere and lots of things to do.
Worst - Lack of overall campus pride/unity except at a few events throughout the year.

I’m so happy I chose to attend UCSD  It’s a little sad to be graduating!

The location for me is a double edged sword. You’re close to the beach with great weather and the spacious campus was amazing compared to the very urban setting of UCLA, but you pay for it when you don’t have a car and literally nothing is within reasonable walking distance. The bus system is great, but even with taking the bus it takes me 30 minutes plus a 10 min walk to reach my volunteer place.

For me:

Best: Despite rumors of the social life, I really loved living on campus in the dorms. I’m in Muir though so it might be diff for others, but it was just nice having a bunch of people you know close by in your suite or across, like if you want to “study” or play games or watch movies, borrow something, ask for help, or just talk super convenient. It was also cool meeting all these different people, with diverse backgrounds, like you get so-cal, nor-cal, out of staters, etc. I also love the different orgs on campus, you can really get involved whatever you want. But join in the beginning of the year if you can cause that’s when people get to know each other first. It was at SD where I really got into dance because of all the dance groups, shows, workshops, and classes. Plus acapella is pretty cool and big here too, just love that music. There’s so much more freedom and stuff for everyone. Also the weather’s pretty decent, not too hot though it can be a bit on the chilly side sometime but it doesn’t stop people from wearing shorts. Also despite not having a car, the transportation here’s decent and the beach is close by.

Bad: Classes are kind of big, so you can feel lost. Plus teachers can be hit or miss, and you need to really try to build a connection. Also the tuition has been going up and on-campus housing and class picking can be sooo stressful, since they both depend on if you have a good time or not. Also noticeably, people get less friendly as the year goes on, so really work at it in the beginning. During welcome week, people are like super outgoing and friendly but from there it dwindles away. I mean during that week you can just talk to random strangers etc, like people are really out there cause i guess no one has set groups yet. but im sure thats like normal. People are still pretty decently nice in general though i’d say.

Worst: we got rapists on campus. so hide yo kids, hide yo wife.
-nothing is open late. Cmon now all i ask is a 24/7 dining hall so we college students can eat.

Best: weather. Sun god!

BEST: Sungod @ I-House

@lover21

Burger King is open 24/7.
