6 or maybe 7 AP's sophomore year? Help!

go hard or go home. If you aren’t taking atleast 9 by sophomore year, your not trying.

I’ll chime in…My kid is in AP World History, APES, and AP LA 10, these are the only AP classes offered to sophomores at our school. APES and AP LA are pretty do-able, but the AP World homework is a killer. The amount of time spent on that class alone each night is close to 2 1/2 hours. The work is fairly easy, it just drags out. On nights when there is homework in all of these classes, plus the other ones, it makes for a really long and stressful night. Add on top of that after school activities and there are nights when she’s up until 2:00 am just getting stuff done.

Only you will know if you can handle that many higher level classes. My suggestion would be to take no more than 3 next year. If you can handle without any issues then take more your junior year.

I really need to think about what I should do…do you guys recommend me take AP Lang as a soph, and AP Lit as a junior because our school forces us to, or just AP World as a soph and an easy AP Psych as a junior?

Stats, micro, and macro are joke APs in my opinion. Calc was the second hardest class ive ever taken. I’m not sure how your teacher handles things, but I had at least 3 hours dedicated each day just to calc. So just think of how much time that eats away

Would adding AP World to my schedule be way too much, even if I learned a lot of Calc BC during the summer?

take AP Calc, Lang, Computer Science and World sophomore year and take the others during junior or senior year. 6/7 APs is way too many, especially coming from only 1 AP

How much do you guys think Lang + World alone would cost in time (hours) everyday?

Last year World took on average an hour a day and this year I’m in Lang and it takes on average an hour and a half a day. So if your teachers are like mine and if you work at my pace, those two classes alone would take between 2 and 3 hours a day. I can’t tell you whether you should take them or not (just because I’m also in decathlon and that takes too much time to judge how long I’d spend doing homework without it) but just consider that plus your other classes and decide if you can handle that and ECs and still have time to breathe.

Thank you so much for your advice, everyone! You guys have seriously help me decide whether or not I could handle all of that work. I have one more question: How hard is AP Computer Science A compared to other AP classes?

Does your plan conform to your hs graduation requirements? You have no science in there. And, as far as I know, there are only 2 AP English classes. So, at our school they are limited to grades 11 and 12. If you start on them in grade 10, are you going to run out of English classes? I don’t know a hs that hands you a diploma without 4 years of English.

I get the impression that you are just out to take every possible AP, without a clear interest/plan. You’re taking an SAT2 in bio, but evidently planning to drop out of science and for that bio to be your terminal class? You’ve got calc and stats in the same year, are you going to run out of math offerings? Are you so interested in econ that you really want to self-study or is this just another trophy?

Talk to the older students at your school who you feel are comparable in academics to you, and see what they say about it. It also depends a lot on what your EC commitments are. In general, can it be done? Sure.

I didn’t really bother listing my other classes, since I want to know about my AP courses. Of course I have science classes. I will take college classes later in Junior year. I’m interested in econ because I need to use it in college along with my tentative future career. How is AP CS compared to other Ap’s?

Workload for AP CS, according to my daughter who has already taken all but econ on your list: “Higher than average, about average for science APs.” She took it without much CS background and had a teacher that believed students should basically figure things out themselves without much introduction/instruction, because “that’s what professionals do”. So I think it could have been less time consuming if the teacher had expected less independence. So, might be easier for you, depending.

If you’re thinking of an econ or related major, why the bio SAT2? I would think something like math and world history would be more relevant to show the colleges.

My parents think that Bio would show that I’m a more well rounded story…is that true?

Student****

I’ll be taking Math II though.

Well, the thing is you will be taking it after a year of Bio and some kids taking it will have had AP bio. But I do know it’s possible to do very well after just a year of bio. Just seemed odd to me considering how much advanced work you seem to be planning. My daughter did take an SAT2 test unrelated to her college major, on the same theory, that it would show well-roundedness, but it is nevertheless a significant interest and strong subject for her and she was confident she could get an 800 without studying. So we figured, why not?

You didn’t mention other classes in addition to all those APs you mentioned. Considering that, I still think it’s do-able, but I doubt you are going to have time for self-studying yet another AP, and I don’t think you are going to have time for really time-consuming ECs either. You should think about what else you want to accomplish in high school. I assume those classes will be there next year also…

Did you end up taking seven Aps?

The original poster has not been active for almost a year. I highly doubt you will get your question answered. Closing thread.

honestly 6 or 7 AP’s sophomore year screams “try-hard” (plus it’s probably not healthy even for a junior or senior). i would stick with 3-4.
