61 Bama students arrested in mega-drugbust

University Of Alabama Drug Bust Nets 61 Students In Tuscaloosa

Fraternities and Sororities will be blamed.

Aren’t they always?

I’m sure it’s because of all the focus on athletics! (jk)

A marijuana bust and they ONLY arrested 61 students? That’s shocking. Seriously though, doesn’t the Tuscaloosa PD have anything better to do than bust college kids for pot?

Is CU looking for OOS transfers?

Also found were prescription narcotics, ectasy, LSD, cocaine, mushrooms and weapons.

What a waste of time, money, and energy. Not to mention lives.

Pot??!! Really??? Like I need another reason not to live in Alabama.

Sounds like police are trying to send a message that they will not tolerate drug possession or distribution in Tuscaloosa. Guess Bama won’t be on the Princeton Reviews list of top pot-friendly schools.

We don’t smoke marijuana in Tuscaloosa
We don’t take our trips on LSD,
We still wave Old Glory at Bear Bryant’s Stadium
And Jim Beam’s still the biggest thrill of all.

One has to wonder if, with the weapons, more gang type of stuff was starting - not something you’d want at any U. I doubt they were after the common, sane, pot user. I don’t know, of course, but that’s the way my brain takes off with the story.

Next: a dragnet for jaywalkers and litterbugs.

OK, maybe it’s more serious than that, but I question this use of police resources.

@TonyK - funny!

As a former police officer pointed out, regular consumption of fast food (& we subsidize that) is much more damaging to your health than marijuana.
So happy I live in Washington.

I cannot believe for the life of me that we’re still arresting people for pot. Disgusting and a waste of tax money.

Not to mention the students who lose their eligibility for federal loans, making it impossible for some to continue their education.
Is that what we want?
To discourage the lower income & middle class students from attending, while those whose families who dont need loans to send their kids to college, can still do so,

Generally, the deep south tends to be less tolerant of drug use. This would probably never happen in certain regions of the country.

Quote from Tuscaloosa Chief of Police:

“I know a lot of people consider it to be a harmless drug. It’s still illegal to possess it, distribute and traffic it in the state of Alabama. Therefore, it’s against the law and we’re going to enforce the law no matter how harmless people think it is.”

emeraldkity, surely you do not mean to imply that the only drug users are lower- and middle- class students?

Where do you get that implication?
CC boards are filled with parents who dont want their kids to take out any loans, their kids are not any less likely to use marijuana than anyone else.

As opposed to police officers in other areas who are committed to spending their time (& taxpayer dollars) on higher priorities.
