640 on math

Is my score of a 640 on the math section of the SAT Is too low?

For Princeton, yes

Yes, it is too low.

it depends on how your other scores are

No, it's fine. Not in the mid 50%, but students still get in with that score. Focus a little more on your subjective data.

Yes. Unless you are legacy, athlete or URM, or there is something else in your story that is compelling, it is too low.

It depends on the entirety of your application.

If you are selling yourself as a future engineer with as alumother described as nothing else compelling I wouldn't count on it.

If you really want an honest assessment of your chances give us a more detailed list with your EC's.

Nope. I'm a math-tard and got in with a 650. However, it's impossible to predict your chances unless you reveal your other scores and activities. Remember, it's your entire package that counts ... one weak score won't necessarily put you out of the running.

here are my other scores:

CR: 740 W: 720

US Hist: 740
Lit: 730
Math level 2: 710

AP US: 5
AP eng lang: 4
AP Calc: 4

and ec wise?

If your other scores are high enough, a 640 on an SAT II will not keep you out. I got in despite a 640 in literature because I had three other high SAT II scores.

M-570
V-690
W-640

Im a really bad test taker! Ive taken SAT Kaplan courses but it doesnt help. Ive also really studied but I cant seem to do any better. I am planning on taking them one more time in Jan but I dont know how much my score will improve. Im in the top 10% of my class and Im from NY in a rural area. My scores for SATII are

Lit-630
French-780
Spanish-790

Im trilingual and I spent one year abroad last year in Paris France. Im latin american and speak spanish at home. Do I have any chance? Im working on writing a good essay

I forgot to mention too I am not planning to major in anything math or science related. Rather I want to major in languages or international relations or communication (journalism)

I forgot one more thing...I went to TASP too and I am really invovled in dance. Ive won national titles and went to New York State Summer School of the Arts Program. I guess my question basically is this: will my super low SAT scores ruin my chance of admission for the IVY leagues?

turnip, don't worry about your score if your heart is set on applying to Princeton. I have a 780M, 590W, 600V from my only sitting of the SAT I, and I'm an international who is going to need a fair amount of financial aid, yet that hasn't stopped me from applying because I feel that I have a lot to offer Princeton, just like it has a lot to offer me. I'm sure that most people here would say, "Oh you have no chance flat out, blah blah blah", in retrospect of my scores, but honestly I don't care because I have a dream and 10 people on the internet saying the abovementioned isn't going to change that whatsoever.

You can't change your score (unless you have the opportunity to do it again in January :p ), so put your heart and soul into the application and cross your fingers that they can look past a sub-par score. Good luck!

Lumberg: Yeah..... Sorry.... They probably won't look at your ecs..... Yeah..... You don't make the first cut.....

Apply to a small liberal arts, the Ivies care too much about thier stats.

^^ Don't listen to him...

i'm in the same boat (i too got only a 640 on my math and am not willing to try again; i am sick of the SAT)

don't let people get you down. if you're shooting for something totally un-math related (as I am) and your grades are good (which i can most likely infer from your other scores) and you have a compelling application, i think you stand a decent chance.

from one mathmatically challenged person to another, good luck!

Don't listen to me?

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but the facts are there. Maybe turnip has a chance, but the rest of you won't get the rest of your application looked at. That's how they look at applicants, I didn't make the system. Go ahead and apply, if you happen to get them to consider the rest of your application, then you have a much better shot, but HPY care far too much about their US News ranking.

you are in man, totally excellent scores dont listen to these people. your scores are superior. in fact youre in. send in an additional BS essay talk about some screwed up thing nobody talks about like about caterpillars how they fascinate you. those adcoms love that stuff. go online find out about caterpillars and talk about them like youre an expert! whoa excellent idea i should have used that. I got into Vanderbilt which is the number one PARTY SCHOOL IN THE SOUTH!
