Is 2230 w/ low CR good enough for Top Schools

Hey I am a rising senior and I was wonderin' if I shood retake the SATs to improve my chances at these schools:
Stanford
Columbia
Duke
Harvard
Princeton
Brown
Georgetown
Cornell
Penn

My problem is CR, I had 680 in that, 800 Math, and 750 Writing

This would be my 3rd time takin the SAT's, I have several extracirriculars w/ some research

Should I take SAT's again and try to bring the critical reading up (I rather not!)

Also I'm Indian so that doesn't help me either

the SAT won't soley keep you out.

Yes, retake. Unless your other things are phenomenal, you should. You don't want your SAT score to be dragging you down.

Or you could try the ACT instead... it's less "tricky".

Your SAT score would not disqualify you from any of those schools.

If all you care about is your SATs, then that attitude can keep you out.

Definitely consider the ACT as an option. My friend had a 2230 (700-780-750) and then tried the ACT and made a 35 (34-35-36-35). And yes, that 36 is on the reading section.

Honestly, your score won't necessarily keep you out from any of those schools (extracurriculars), however for the most selective, it will certainly not help you either, and for those schools you want every advantage you can get. I suggest a retake or look into the ACT like others have said.

This suggestion is based on some personal experience. Had 2250 on the SAT I, with 2320 on SAT IIs, got into Cornell/UPenn (with honours things from them), waitlisted at Harvard/Stanford. Didn't apply to the others.

SAT is not the only thing I care about, I actually think it is pretty ridiculous especially with a subjective writing portion and poor-written questions...

I want to get into at least one of those 9 schools so I need evry advantage

any more input?

Your CR is low for those schools.

I'm in the same exact boat...I feel for you.

CR: 660
Math: 800
Writing: 800

Sigh...at least my GPA is decent and my extracirriculars are good. CR ****es me off so much.

Good luck, breh.

Do not let your scores define you. Focus on the rest of your application because that's just as important. A 2230 will not keep you out of those schools even if your CR score is low.

Those schools dont care about SATs that much, especially stanford, so i would focus on other things.

Ptang69,
I suspect that you already know the following, but here are the 25/75 and average CR scores for your target schools. As you can see, your 680 is better than the average only at Cornell. However, you are in the 25/75 range for all of your target schools except for Duke and Harvard and on the cusp with Princeton.

USNWR Rank, School, CR 25, CR 75, CR Avg.
1 Princeton ,680, 800, 740
2 Harvard, 690, 800, 745
4 Stanford, 660, 760, 710
7 U Penn, 650, 740, 695
8 Duke, 690, 770, 730
9 Columbia, 660, 760, 710
15 Brown,670, 760,715
12 Cornell, 620, 730, 675
23 Georgetown, 640, 750, 695

it's fine, if your other parts of the app are strong

Many schools ignore the CW score right now because they don't have enough history with it. I was told this by at least two admissions officers on the tours we went on. CR and Math are most important, and I think above 700 on each gets you in the running. I would retake.

^I’ve never seen someone so excited about a bump…

“I want to get into at least one of those 9 schools so I need evry advantage”

Do any of these schools allow ED? If so, maybe pick the one you’d REALLY like to attend, then apply ED. Would nt that give your app a few more points? My friend did that w/ yale and he got in. He did have a 36 on the ACT (I guess he was not taking any prisoners).

I’d say retake, but you’ve already taken it multiple time. Your score isn’t likely to increase without significant prep at this point. Which, btw, I highly recommend. The SAT forums here are great. Practice, practice, practice! The SAT is a game that can be unlocked with some time and effort.

Retake if you can be fairly certain that you’ll improve. So, retake if you’re going to study and prep and take practice tests and all that.

And try the ACT.
