My essay is currently ringing in at 720 words, but i like it...if you were accepted and had a long essay like mine please post here to give me confidence!

i didn't get in anywhere yet, but i have a friend that got into swarthmore with an 800 word common app essay. so don't worry

follow the rules

whoa red sox, are you an adcom?

Doesn't the common app limit the # of characters?

oh man, make it engaging please. What do adcoms care about length if you keep them craving for more?

i have a 650 word one...but it reads pretty well. it's fast paced. i'm nervous too though.

Mine was over 700 words. Don't despair! You'll be fine, and no, the Common App does not cut you off at 500 words, you can go much, much higher if I recall correctly (like 5000 characters, which includes spacing or something).

I used the common app for my school. But for their essays they say write them in multi paragraph form, they don't give a word limit. So my common app essay was around 900 words.

It's 6000 chars, deroutefille. I know b/c mine was like 5800 chars:D You applied to Mt Holyoke ED rite? So what happened?
Oh, and did you get in, scarletleavy?

Yeah I did.

dont worry, 700 words essay is fine as long as it's good. admin officers wont spend their precious time to count how many words your essay has!!

Seconded. They'll spend like two minutes on your essay however long it is.

Mine's 760 words.

Yeah, there we go, 6000 characters, and that box with the yellow triangle pops up to warn you anyhow. And I was accepted to Mount Holyoke ED, yes. So, I suppose length was not a problem, even with a 750-odd word essay, and my supplement "Why do you want to attend?" essay, which was a page and a quarter, single spaced. I am admittedly verbose and adore the minutae by nature, but my essays were concise, to the point, and punchy as far as I know according to those who read it. And interesting. If it's interesting, they'll keep reading.

Don't worry, my common app essay was about 700 and i got in to my ED1 school

My essay was about 650. I had to cut it down only for Brown b/c they actually limited the characters to 3500. I was kind of mad b/c Brown officers always talk about how intellectual and academic freedom is really important there, but they limit you to exactly 3500 characters.

I doubt admissions officers will really notice. They just don't have the time to if every single essays is under 500 words.
