740 good enough for Eng?

Hi all,

I took the SAT on the Dec.1 test date, and I managed to get a 2340 (800CR 740M 800WR). I would like to apply to Princeton engineering and right now I'm wondering if I'm going to have to take the test again because of the 740 math score.

Should I take it again, or is it good enough?

If it isn't good enough, can a high score on Math level 2 override its potentially harmful impact?

You’re fine. That score is perfectly good. No point in wasting a saturday for 60 points. A good math 2 score will be more impressive than a sat math score, in my opinion. But either way 740 is definitely “good enough.”

If you’re applying as an engineering major… I might retake that. You need a M 750 and Calc BC 5 to take higher level math courses so I think for reference that shows their standards for math at Princeton.

I would not retake.

normally i would suggest not to retake but this is engineering, and math is usually the easiest to bring your score up in. Give it another shot

740 wow. I think you’re showing off. Actually, with a score like that, you should be.

This post is definitely not a “show off” post. It seems like a sincere concern, “Lizard.”

Probably good enough for anything other than engineering, math and Physics.

I’m sorry, ram027, I truly am. It says on top 740 in eng, and that I thought was pretty amazing. It was only after I read the whole thing that I realized it was genuine concern.

Hi! On my first SAT, I got a 730 (got two questions wrong and accidentally left one blank). I also wanted to retake it, and my friends disagreed on whether I should. I ended up retaking and getting an 800, with 800s on the other two sections (just like you!). So from my experience, after studying and practicing from a couple of good SAT Math books, I was able to get those 70 points my second try six months later.

I’m actually not going into anything STEM-related, so I think an 800 would also help you much more than it helped me. If you have the time to retake, I’d say go for it! Otherwise you may be at a disadvantage for your intended major. (In addition, I believe the additional preparation improved my math skills overall–a nice perk.)
