Hi, I received a 740 on my January literature subject test. I scored 770-800 on the practice tests I took, so it was a bit of a disappointment.

I'm applying as an English major to a few top schools. Most of my EC's are focused around writing. Will the 740 in literature hurt me? I don't want to retake.

My other scores are a 2250 (1st time SAT) and 790 (chem subject test).

Universities realize that the potential major you put on college applications is an indefinite declaration. And yes, a 740 is very good indeed. I found the Literature Subject Test moderately difficult, particularly since it was hard to make confident discriminations between a few of the answer choices. Also, there is a fairly stringent curve. I believe I missed three overall (technically four since I did not omit any).

Chemistry was my favorite subject in high school and is definitely a discipline that I wish to integrate into my college concentration. As for Literature, I simply wanted to add a third test to my exam schedule and that was the one that I felt I could do best on. It is more of an aptitude-based assessment so there was essentially no material in particular that I needed to learn. Physics, for example, would have been more pertinent to my eventual college major, but I did not have the confidence with the material to obtain the top score.

I chose chem because I took chem AP sophomore year and liked it.

I also read a lot, and my main EC’s focus on writing, so I chose literature. Though, I admit that I was expecting a 770+ score. I’m applying to three ivies, and two selective LAC’s.

Hopefully the 740 doesn’t hurt me too much.
