77 Mids going to the Temple game

I just found out today that my volleyball coach received tickets to the game last week. He told me he would've given them to me if he didn't get them last minute. That stinks. :(

"We must always remember that we are the face of the Navy."

Hmmmm......Once again I'm concerned that what he "says" he wants to do and what he is doing are not the same thing.

I can appreciate the "vision".... juliemrn, thanks for posting-

not sure I understand the wisdom behind the "execution" that ties into the "vision"....

but sure as heck hoping calmer seas are ahead.
Have tons of faith in those mids.... their "competence, character and compassion".....
they will earn their due respect, of that I am sure.

Willing to give things a chance....
(minus the food debacle- )
but sure as heck am missing seeing those mids at the games representing THEIR NAVY!!!!!!!!!

Well, we can be sure of one thing. CG will probably think long and hard before he agrees to any more Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday away games. What the heck was he thinking? I bet App State, which coincidentially was one of Coach Johnson's first college coaching jobs, will have a few available dates over the next few years.

"I bet App State... will have a few available dates "

You're so right. I wonder if their deal with MI was a one-time contract.... bet it is now!

Just be glad Navy isn't playing Louisville's scheduled dates. 6 of 12 games (incl 4 home games) are on weeknights. Mostly due to the almighty dollar. ESPN weeknight games started it.

When MI coach Lloyd Carr gets booted maybe Paul Johnson will have had enough of the lack to school support and go to the big house!

Hope not but it has to be demoralizing to have so few Midshipmen in the stands. at least they will be at the home games.

^^^^^There is a group over on gomids who would love for you to join them. Of course you have to also accept their premise that if the football players didn't have to wear uniforms, be a part of the Brigade, or go to classes, we would have a much better football team.

Some of the Mids would agree too. But hey that is what makes Navy more exciting - they shouldn't be as good given that they actually do have to go to class, yet they certainly hold their own.

As a former NCAA athlete Big Ten Conference - the most disgusting thing was going to my first semester meeting for all Athletes and being told that we could only schedule classes between 10am and 2pm due to morning and afternoon practices and if you needed a tutor it would be provided.. really wasn't about the education only the sport, not much has changed in the past 25+ years.

I haven't read anything on gomids.com that advocates that football players shouldn't have to wear uniforms, go to class, etc. Miss formations especially evening meal during the season, yes...makes sense. I had the ability to sign in during my in-season sports so that I could stay later at practice, shower and then get to the meal. I also remember bowling with my classmates and company officer on Wednesday evenings as a firstie. Great camaraderie for us 1/C but again, I guess we all could have been studying more including the guys that went Nuke. I also use to surf in Ocean City with a underclassman, he went Nuke and commanded a sub a few years back. It doesn't hurt to have some time to have some other interests. It definitely made him much more interesting to hang out with. If the Academy wants studious one dimensional students then perhaps they shouldn't be recruiting the student-athlete and just concentrate on the student. Over 90% of the latest incoming classes were varsity athletes in high school. More than 50% were members of NHS, 10% stood no. 1 in their class. They're not stupid, don't need to be lead by the hand 24/7 and after Plebe year should be able to figure out when and how to study. Plebes need the mandatory study hours for another reason...to be secure from the upperclass for a few hours to concentrate on studying. Definitely, a valid argument. The rest is nukism. I'll go back to gomids now.

What you are saying is exactly how my Mid feels. They do not need to be held by the hand 24/7. They are bright kids. They know what they need to do and when to do it. Mando meals all week long with Monday through Friday night mando study time is not the way to teach leadership, study skills or the likes.

These kids have no time to hang out - develop outside interests. They can't even do something like play golf after class on Friday - can't get a round in and be back for Mando Meal - or for that matter go sailing like they did on Friday afternoons Plebe Year again no time with Formation and Mando meal. One dimensional Mids is what USNA will be developing. BORING!

There is another facet to the concept of "Face of the Navy" that doesn't seem to be addressed here. Most Americans don't have direct ties to anyone in uniform. Unfortunately, because of this lack of understanding, most Americans can't tell the difference between solder/sailor/airman/marine/etc. Thus, when midshipmen make the news for inappropriate behavior on a cruise ship or for an alleged sexual assault scandal, those same sordid stories are appearing right alongside those of heroes who are serving in harm's way, and in some cases, dying. Those who make the ultimate sacrifice shouldn't have their service degraded by unfair comparisons to those shenanigans.

Anyone watching the game on ESPN? In a crowd of red (the Rutgers color), there is one little corner of midshipman in white. I'm curious how many went this week.

I heard >50

What does it matter...it's not near enough. But, I'm feeling more secure knowing that the Mids are back in the hall studying on a Friday night. No need to slack off now knowing that graduation is only 3-4 years away.
