I am applying to Notre Dame. I have an 800 cr score and a 550 math score. My sat II's are: Literature 790, US Hist. 750, Chemistry 540 (I'm going to suppress that one, I took it a semester after I took the class, foolishly). I am home schooled, but I have taken several dual credit classes. They are all A's + one B. Additionally, I plan to major in English.

My main extra-curric.s are: Boyscouts (I am Life and will be Eagle), work (nothing special), and Organic Gardening (On a large scale.) I have some other stuff, like 4-h photography awards, but it is mostly nickel-and-dime stuff.

So, 1. What are my chances (as far as you can judge) and 2. Are white males a URM in the English department? I thought my English major might be an advantage to me.

Having been a white male in the English department, I can tell you that, yes, technically we are a minority because we make up less than half of the English majors (English is predominately female at ND), but that statistic is irrelevant to your application chances, as everyone enrolls in the College of First Year Studies their freshman year.

More general advice? Pick up the math score if you can. I applied with an 800 cr and a 680 m, but admissions has gotten more stringent. Is the 800 impressive? Certainly. But a 580 m is average or below for ND students.

So, I’m at like 10% chances or less right now? And a better math score would likely put me closer to fifty-fifty?

Oh, to be in high school again… sigh.

No, I’d say it’s about a fair (meaning 50-50) shot, but we’re not on this board for a fair shot, we’re trying to increase our odds in our favor. Improve some things here and there and your chances will go up.
