These are my SAT scores from the first time I took them, 2270 total. Don't get me wrong, I know these are great scores, but I'm wondering if the math score will hurt me. I'm not looking to go to ivy league, I might apply to one or two as reach schools, but my main reach/match (not sure at this point, I had expected a 2100 :P.) is probably Georgetown and my main match/saftey is Boston College. I know that colleges take the highest combined scores.. but I got PERFECT english scores, is it better to leave it at that? Wouldnt it look bad if I only got it once and went down?

Also, I've already gotten math up 50 points from the first time I took a full length practice test and I'm not going into anything math or science related, english and languages all the way, and that's reflected in all other areas, so does it really make a different if my overall score is at or well above the averages for the schools I'm applying to?

You might want to retake it to show your consistency. There’s not much you can lose, as most colleges superscore your SAT. I would definitely say retake to raise the M score.

I got 800 M, 800 W, and 670 CR, so I’m pretty much in the same situation as you. I’m definitely retaking. I already took the Subject Tests though, so if you haven’t taken those you might want to study for them.

I took the subject tests and got 720 lit, 730 us history, and 650 math 1 haha… I mean, it’s pretty clear english and not math is my strong point so I’m wondering if it’s worth it if I’m not going into math or science, but language.

I actually recommend against retaking your SATs, unless you spend your summer dedicated to studying (so at least 2 or 3 hours of math practice!!!). My reason is that you got a so-so score for Math 1, which strengthens my belief (and most likely college admissions advisors) your weakness in math. I don’t believe, however, that it will hurt you too much, unless you’re planning to major in something closely related to math or applying to MIT or other tech schools, haha. BUT YOU AREN’T! YAY!

On another note, I recommend that you do study a lot for your SAT Math. I feel that any strong college applicant should take Math IIC, not Math IC, which you did in your case. If you do enough practice and have already taken Precalc, you should do better on Math IIC than you did on your Math IC. Studying for Math IIC will also help you improve your SAT I Math a lot as well.

With your reach being Georgetown and safety being BC, you don’t need to retake any of your tests. You can take a science SAT II though. It wouldn’t hurt unless you score under 650. With your current SAT score, however, you are definitely qualified for all Ivy schools, assuming your grades and extra-curriculars and leadership qualifications are equally awesome. If you can afford the time and money to apply to all the Ivies you’d like to attend (I hope not only one or two), I believe you should! In this case, you should try to retake your SAT (after intensive practice) and SAT Lit (don’t get me wrong, you have a great score, but you can do better!). Consider Math IIC as well though!

ALMOST the same situation: 800 cr, 780 writing, 670 math. I’m retaking it. I’m a relatively poor math student but we’re both smart kids and the math on the SAT isn’t particularly difficult and is completely learnable. why not try again? I’m going to study a bit this summer, a bunch in september, and give it my best shot in october. hopefully i end up just breaking 700.

If you r not going to be focused in areas concerning math, I don’t think retaking the SAT is necessary. But you can if you have time to fix the gap between your reading/writing and math.

Hey I’m in the same boat as well! Exact same SAT I scores. However, I took the Math II Subject test and got a 780. I signed up for the October 1st SAT, but do you think I still need to take it?

I would not retake. However, OP be aware of what the issue is with Georgetown. Georgetown does not use the writing section of the SAT; your score is 1470 for Georgetown with 800CR and 670M. Its middle 50% range math last year was 650 to 750 so you are within it but in the lower half. Its “average” math score was 695 which you are below but close enough to that the SAT score will not be an issue. It wants 3 SAT subject tests. It does not publish its ranges for SAT II scores but your math 1 score is likely a little low. If you are considering retaking anything, it should probably be that math test but you should only do so if you are really confident you are going to score much higher and that seems highly questionable. What you don’t want is to take math and score lower particularly since Georgetown requires you to send all scores.
