86,000 UCB applications this year...

anyone see that thread in the Berkeley forum?

legit?

thoughts?

what the... a sudden influx? if thats the case UCLA probably got like a 100,000

It is possible. There are many factors contributing to the alleged sharp increase in UG aplications to UCLA/UCB. One of the obvious factor is the economy. Also, I read somewhere that the 09-10 schoolyears represents the peak in students from the baby boomers era.

But man...it is going to be very competitive to get in to the top UCS this year, sigh. With the supposed increase in OOS being admitted, that means less space for in-staters.

If the number, 86K, is close to true, GG.

BTW, the OP was referring to this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/626543-2009-berkeley-applications.html

its definitely higher than usual but as of right now that 86,000 is an uncorroborated rumor. Whats is definitely true is that they want to increase the number of OOS students so its good for them. On the other hand, how many OOS students would now rather go to a local school due to the economy? I don't know if transfer students are impacted tremendously for this year, at least not to the same extent that high school applicants are. Most CC students would be going to a public school anyways, and if you qualify for UCB/UCLA you were applying there regardless of the economy, and the economy really didn't tank till this September. I think its really going to suck for the CC transfer students next year once this current crop of CC freshman start applying. 2009 Transfer Season for Fall 2010 admittance is going to be brutal.

Wow, that is a lot. I can actually not imagine that it is that many. According to http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp they had 36k applicants for 2008 school year. I can not imagine that the applications would have jumped more than 100% from one year to the next.

I agree with USMC_Izzy: Although I think it will be a very competitive admissions cycle, I imagine it will probably be worse for freshman. The wave of freshmen who opt for a Community College this cycle will be applying next year for Fall 2010 admission.

Just means you need to work harder.
