9 semester rule?

My son is transferring to Carolina as a junior. With the transfer, major changes, etc, it looks like he may well take a 5th year to finish up a double major. Several places on the website state in bold that a student must graduate within 9 semesters of entering college (transferred semesters count too). Does anyone have first hand experience with this? I know of students who were not accepted to B school or J school the first time that will now be "behind" one year--thus on a 10 semester plan. Does one apply for an exception? Is it enforced and what do they do? I had never seen this stated before--maybe never looked--but I thought schools were mostly happy to have you there if you weren't causing problems and were paying tuition ;).

If you haven't done so, you might take a look at:

If I recollect, a petition is available to obtain permission to attend for a 10th semester under certain circumstances. I would suggest that your son contact the advising office at UNC as soon as possible so he will have a better idea of his options.

I just remember hearing something about the 25% surcharge if you go over it and for those of us who are OS, it is something to fear.

Son has appt with advisor tomorrow and I will encourage him to ask about this. I'm concerned about it--of course, he says I worry too much and things will work out. He is really unable to get any courses towards his majors this coming semester as everything was closed already. I just don't see how in the remaining 4 semesters how he would get everything in for two majors and a minor---especially when it seems like it might be difficult to get classes in a particular semester.

mkm - I wouldn't worry too much. I remember feeling the same way last year when my d came out of the very last CTOPS session having very little of what she needed in her schedule, missing labs and recitations, and on a couple of waitlists. But within a day or two of the start of add/drop, she had everything she wanted/needed. In fact, I noticed UNC is in the process of adding a section of a really good/high demand sociology course my d wanted for the fall semester. When my d checked today, the new section is there, but the meet time/place is still not known. So even the course offering/bulletin is a work in progress and it does seem UNC is trying to be responsive to demand.
